This is a follow-on to my post on Red Sea Visibility, taking other factors into account. The trip would be early November (this year).

I am trying to decide between Dahab/Sharm and Marsa/Hamata in terms of (1) coral quality, (2) presence/diversity of marine life, (3) presence of large species.

IMHO the corals are better in the south, you can get to Elphinstone from Marsa Alam easily and the chance to see sharks there is good, though not as good as in spring, they seem to prefer colder water. You can (or not) find dolphins and turtles everywhere in the Red Sea. Up north there are more wrecks.
