I used to agree with buddy and put key under a wheel in case of an emergency we had access to mobile phones

Most vehicles can be programed to wait before the alarm goes off. My truck starts dinging at me for about a minute. If I do not put the key in the ignition and start the truck, the alarm goes off.

I have hid keys on the exterior of the truck. I have buried them too.

One time, while swimming in a wetsuit, I stashed the key in the wetsuit. Somehow, it fell out while I swam. The comments from the tow truck driver to me standing there in my wetsuit was funny.
