Hey everyone,

I am going to be starting the PADI Tek courses in April starting with Tek 40. I need to know what all is needed for the PADI Course. I have been told that you start with minimal tanks and add a tank every Open Water dive throughout the course.

I want to know what additional gear I will need for this course and beyond, Tek45, Tek 50, etc.

My Gear List:
Hollis SMS 75
(2) AL40
(2) AL80
(2) HOG D-1 Cold Water First Stages
(2) HOG Classic Second Stages
(2) HOG SPG's on 6 inch hoses
Galileo Luna Computer - I dont believe I need the Tri-mix upgrade for the Tek 40 course
Tri-Fold Wrist Slate
Wrist Mount Compass

I also have an Atomic ST-1 First Stage with an Apeks XTX200 Second Stage. Which I am selling the XTX200 and going to get 2 Atomic Second Stages for my designated Singles Back Mount. I am so sick of changing up the regs every time I dive a different set up. I just became an OWSI and would like a designated reg for that.

Again this is for the PADI Tek 40 Course so I would like any input on what that course requires. And then what I might look to start acquiring for the other tek courses

Oh and I dive in Southern California - 7mm wetsuit/Drysuit all year

Thanks Everyone

This might be a question better directed to your instructor :)

so you're required to have
backgas-in this gas a pair of 80's, check
two complete regs, hog d1's-check
stage/deco cylinder, fully rigged-al40 with Atomic reg-check
bcd-check
redundant computers or computer with bottom timer-need a second one. good excuse to buy a perdix.... though any cheap bottom timer and tables will work
exposure-check
argon-not required
weight system-check
jon line as needed-your call
DSMB- need one of those
reel and lift bag or dsmb-see above
knife-need a z-knife of some sort. I recommend benchmade 7 or trilobyte
backup mask-optional
compass-see Perdix comment
lights-optional
backup bcd-use a drysuit since you're using al80's, or bring a lift bag

so based on that you need to figure out your stage reg, get a backup or new primary computer. dsmb, I recommend the Deep Sea Supply DSMB, it's really slick with a reel, knife, and compass. Compass can be incorporated into your computer if you buy something like the perdix

I do have a SMB, 50 foot reel, cold water Z knife (Dive Rite) I have a wrist mount compass, also there is one in the Galileo Luna, I just have never liked the digital compass.

I am not going to use the Atomic set up for tek. That will be my singles backmount set up.

Thank you for the list. Where did you find that? I looked on PADI but found no such list

I don't think the 50' reel is gonna cut it, you'll need a 100-150' spool/reel.

Drop me a PM with your email and I can send you the 21-page equipment primer eBooklet that I give my sidemount/tech students.

Whilst my course is run in the tropics and my suggestions are based on that environment, there might be a few ideas you find useful. Do check with your actual instructor though - there are different approaches to equipment selection for sidemount/tech.

In general, requirements for any PADI course, including Required Equipment for a particular course, will be found in the Student Manual for the course, and the Instructor Manual. You will not find that information on the PADI website.

This is what the Tec Sidemount Instructor Manual actually lists as equipment requirements:

In addition, you would require everything necessary for the Tec40 course - if conducting the course as per full technical rig. That is:

• Double cylinders of at least 12 l/70 cf each, with isolator manifold.
• The isolator manifold is not required for divers using sidemount configuration.
• Divers known to have a very low gas consumption rate may, at the instructor’s
discretion, use lower capacity cylinders than specified here, provided the diver
will have ample gas to assist a team mate in a gas sharing emergency.
• Primary and secondary regulators for back mounted double manifolds, one
with two metre/seven foot hose for air sharing and one with SPG. Note: In sidemount
configuration, one regulator must have the two metre/seven foot hose,
and both regulators must have an SPG.
• Stage/decompression cylinder(s) (1 for Tec 45, 2 for Tec 50) with regulator and
SPG, with proper labels/markings.
• Tec diving BCD(s) and harness (backmount or sidemount)
• Two multigas enriched air capable dive computers, or one multigas enriched
air computer and a back up single gas computer with dive tables, or one single
gas enriched air computer and a backup timer and depth gauge with dive tables.
• Exposure suit appropriate for environment and dive duration (if students will
use dry suits, they should be trained/experienced in their use in recreational diving
prior to using them for tec training or diving).
• Argon dry suit inflation system (as needed for environment)
• Weight system (if needed). Note: Students and staff should weight for the
contingency of decompressing with near-empty primary cylinders and empty or
absent stage/deco cylinders.
• Jon line (as needed for environment)
• Inflatable signal tube, whistle and/or other visual and audible surface signaling
devices. Note that a sausage type DSMB may double for the inflatable signal
tube.
• Reel and lift bag (bright yellow preferred) or DSMB. A suitable DSMB has
sufficient buoyancy to help steady a diver during a drifting decompression, and
is unlikely to spill when deployed from the underwater.
• Knife/cutting device and back up
• Slate
• Back up mask (optional)
• Compass
• Lights (optional – as required for dive environment)
• Backup buoyancy control – the student must have a reliable means for
controlling buoyancy and maintaining decompression stops in midwater
with a failed primary BCD. This is usually accomplished with a backup
BCD (double wings) or, when using light weight cylinders, the use of a dry
suit is permitted.
Note: A lift bag/DSMB is not considered a reliable method of backup buoyancy
control.
