Mares MR 42 T cannot be serviced, correct?

Hello Mares specialists,

I bought a used MR 42 T and wanted to have it serviced for safety reasons.

The service station in Switzerland told me that they do not service this specific model as it has a construction error and it might be damaged if they open it. They said one part is so small and thin, that if it is not handled properly it will be damaged and the airflow is bad afterwards.

Since I found no info on the internet, and especially not on the mares page, I ask the forum.

• Is this true?
• What can I do?
• Have I lost my money?

My wife uses a MR 42 T and it has been serviced twice by ScubaToys. She has over 250 dives on it (have it serviced every 100 dives) and has never had a problem with it.

The MR42 is a beatiful piece of excellent engineering. It's quite small, and the poppet seat (a part which seals the valve in the 1st stage) needs to be removed very, very carefully using only compressed air, and NOT using a tool (like with other first stages). In the worst case scenario, if the poppet seat is removed the wrong way using a sharp object, scrathes might be left on the sealing surfaces inside the 1st stage. If this happens, the poppet will leak and that will degrade the performance of the regulator.

I'm guessing they either haven't had any experience with this model and are choosing not to take any chances, or they did in fact try servicing one (improperly) and damaged the sealing surfaces, so they don't want to go down that road again.

It seems that many online stores have stopped distributing it. How is the availability of parts? I'm considering getting a brand new Mr42t Proton metal being offered for $260 from our Mares distributor here, but I'm concerned about the servicability.

Even though the MR42 is not the newest regulator out there, Mares supports it across it's Service network. The revision kits are available (to authorized Service centers), and it shouldn't be a problem to get it serviced or get parts.
