Cayman Air will begin offering nonstop flights from Grand Cayman to Roatan twice weekly beginning March 16. It is usually pretty easy to find reasonable flights from the US to GC, so perhaps this option will make it easier and/or cheaper to continue on to Roatan.

Welcome to Cayman Airways

CaymanAirways:
The new nonstop flights to Roatan will operate on Thursdays and Saturdays, with flight KX884 departing Grand Cayman at 6:50pm, arriving in Roatan at 7pm (Roatan time) where the aircraft will overnight. The return legs are on Fridays and Sundays, with flight KX885 departing Roatan at 7:35am, arriving on Grand Cayman ...

It will require an 8 night reservation stay on Roatan. Most resorts are not going to play, no visitors will want to pay. Momentum in Roatan is a 7 Day Saturday Turn model.

Looks like it was really designed to facilitate travel and commerce between the closely related families of Roatan and Cayman. A whole lot of Cousins among the Boddens, Warrens et al.

Airlines are never motivated to beat another carriers price...even if it's crazy high. Why kill the golden goose?

Thanks for posting Kathy. This would make for an outstanding 2 week dive trip. Just checked flight costs for some random dates this summer and it was $322 US round trip. Pretty sweet!

They will fly from Cayman to Roatan on Thursday and Saturday in the evening. Which means that you can fly from Europe and connect with the Roatan flight without an overnight stay. Possibly the first time you can get from Europe to Roatan in less than 24 hours!

The return flights are Friday and Sunday mornings. Again meaning you do not overnight on the way back and make the journey to Europe in approx 24hrs.

This could be the way to get to Roatan even from the states. Possibly the cheapest option at some times of year, maybe most times of year.

Doc - Maybe the all inclusive resorts won't be happy to change their scheduling from the typical Saturday to Saturday 7 or14 night stay, but there are plenty of independent pay as you dive diveshops, hotels and vacation rentals that will welcome you.

All the more reason to look beyond the AI offerings and find some of the Boutique gems Roatan has to offer..

OR, you could STILL enjoy an AI resort, and you could STILL enjoy the amazing diving on the south side of Roatan, and you could arrive and depart on whatever days you like.

Media Luna Resort & Spa is happy to have us whatever days we travel. It is situated just beyond CocoView, provides 3 boat dives per day and great shore diving as well. This trip we will be arriving on a Thursday and departing on a Sunday. One week is simply not enough time to dive Roatan :D

Finally! Back in the 1980s, when I lived in Honduras, the Bay Islands community (families like the Millers, Boddens, etc.) used to either fly private aircraft or use a small freighter to regularly visit and trade with the Caymans. Seems that the same families settled in both areas back in the 1600 - 1700s and all being seafaring people, kept in touch through the centuries.

I see this as more of an advance for the native population than a tourism related change. History of a place is always one of its most interesting aspects.

Very true, but it may also provide an alternative for tourists that want to visit Roatan. It's pretty easy to get to Grand Cayman and you can often find good prices on airfare, so hopefully the connecting flights to Roatan won't be too pricey.

It would also make it easy to do a 2-island trip.

Indeed it would. Adding this flight is a win for the islanders and a win for the tourists.
