I picked up a used VT 4 and can't seem to get the backlight to work. My understanding is that it has an ambient light sensor. So it needs to be dark in order to light up. I'm not sure if it needs to in an active dive also to light up. I'd like to figure out if the light film is broken before a night dive.

Can anybody with a VT 4 tell me if their backlight works above water? Thanks.

Right from the manual

<= 2.75 volts (warning level)
• Backlight is completely disabled.
• Battery icon (shell with inner bar) appears solid (Fig. 3a).
• If a dive is started, the icon is not displayed on the dive mode screens.
• All functions, including Compass Mode, continue to be available

Thanks for the replies. Putting a new battery in was one of the first trouble shooting steps I attempted. I'm curious if anybody with a VT 4 can tell me if the light works above water.

Yes. It works above water. But it does need to be a bit on the dark side. Under bright lights, it doesn't turn on, but outside of that, pressing and releasing the select button should make it light up.
