Are flex arms interchangeable or compatible between brands? I mean, I imagine that these things are essentially manufactured in China by the same supplier to different lengths with the different name brands on them.

For example, if I have a flexible arm from Backscatter, will it pop onto the butt piece that bolts to the tray? Or, if I want to extend an arm, could I pop pieces from one brand onto the other?

They come in different sized diameters. If you already have the base and top you want, look on amazon for "Loc-line" to get additional sections in the correct size.

There is more than one brand (shape) on the market that are not inter changeable.

The concept was invented by the loc line people. Most of the back scatter flex arms are loc line, but they also have Fantasea flex arm which is different.

You will have to determine which brand and which size you have.
