Too many people just aren't that comfortable in the water, and absolutely have no comfort level if their face is underwater.. These are the breast stoke people that swim 50 laps without ever getting wet from the neck up.
Was in the pool with a number of those on Thursday - all wearing extremely strong perfume and all had obviously ignored the signs that said all bathers must use the showers prior to entering the pool.

It was so bad that I actually gagged while reaching one end of the pool when they were there.

I hear these all the time:

I don't like the ocean.
Aren't you scared? I would be too scared.
Do you ever see any sharks?
I'm scared of sharks.
What about the waves?
I don't like my head underwater.
It seems to scary.
I don't want to smell like a fish.
I seems like too much work.
Isn't there a lot of pressure down there?
I'm afraid of the water.
I could drown.
The equipment could break down and would die.
I'm afraid I would freak out.
I don't like to feel closed in.
Isn't it dark down there?
How do you see anything?

And this is even before they find out how much all the gear costs!

Sigh!!!!!

Well, most days (by far) I don't dive.
Not exclusively, but mostly for one of these three reasons:
1.) Need to hold a job
2.) Lack of time because of 1.
3.) Lack of budget because of 1.
...
How to "fix" reason 1 ?

Well, once can definitely dive more if one is single. Now, I'm not suggesting you get rid of the family!

Divers are usually pretty good company. One reason might well be that wusses don't dive.
I'm not so sure I'd like to change that.

I've given up trying to convince friends and family to dive...after the same excuses...I'm gonna die, sharks will eat me, my ears will hurt, I got an ear infection swimming. I've figured it's easier to turn a diver into a friend than a friend into a diver!

To me, diving is a bit like religion.

Just because I am devout doesn't mean my friends all want to hear about it all the time and/or be converted.

Funny but I agree.

The ones I hear the most are being claustrophobic and afraid of sharks/barracuda/assorted other marine life. They're all fascinated when I show them photos and videos I've taken, but they just shake they're heads and say they could never do that.

I've had a couple of people say they can't swim, which might be a pretty good reason to stay out of the water.
