Somewhere to try out new gear in Christchurch

Anyone know if there are any deep pools or lakes handy to Christchurch for messing about with new gear/ trying new skills etc?

Lake Coleridge is chilly and deep. Dive courses are run there.

Cheers. Is there anything interesting to look at there?

I've been using Lake Rua just north of the airport. It's about 6m deep and perfect for experimentation. Problem is that the gate is randomly locked so getting access is a bit hit and miss.

In a word, no! A road cone underwater (just to remind you you are in Canterbury) is about as exciting as it gets...!
