The ditching/donning thread got me thinking about the last time I removed by doubles in the water. We were doing an inspection in a harbor and the ladders were too icy to climb in scuba. I tied a figure 8 knot on my manifold and watched as my gear was craned out high over my head by a construction company.

I never thought I'd see my gear dangling in the sky above a freighter.

What did you think you'd never see when you started diving?

The total disrespect of divers for the ocean and its creatures.
Basically, hot to sh!t in your own playground.
Unfortunately, I see this too often.

I started diving while in college.... what didn't I ever expect to see?

A family (mine) of divers:

Hmmm ... things I never thought I would see when I took up scuba diving ...

- the inside of a submerged cave
- a wreck laying in 250 feet of water in Lake Superior
- a baby octopus emerging from an egg
- sh-sh-shark from less than three feet away
- somebody ... anybody ... telling me they actually liked my pictures

There are many other things I never thought I would see when I took up scuba diving ... but most of them are due to the fact that I was unaware at the time they even existed. And here I am, nearly 4,000 dives later, still seeing things underwater that cause me to wonder what the heck is that ...
