We got out early today to beat the heat and humidity we've had all week. After one dive the winds were already up, as were the swells. We made one dive at the Hyperion Elevated Outfall Pipe off El Segundo then raced back home.

At thirty feet it was dark and dirty but at least the surge we battled through last time was gone. Among the few highlights was a spot with dozens of lobsters preparing for the molting/mating season. The water is still to warm at 67°.

Great shots as always! I was out on the ODA boat at the radio tower yesterday morning, and even at 100+ ft it was still dark and dirty. The good news was the water is warm - 76 on the surface, so diving wet was a nice and refreshing alternative to our current hot and humid. Too bad we didn't have the luxury of looking at the structure to enjoy the types of images you captured and shared

Are there any new nets/lobster traps on the radio tower? I haven't been there for awhile and I know Kurt had a few dives on there before to remove some of the trash.

Very interesting to see all those thatched barnacles on the carapace of that lobster. Must not have had to molt for a while. I've never seen that over on this side of the Channel.

I've never seen that many on a carapace before. It was a large bug, close to five pounds so maybe it hasn't molted for a year and has been hanging out in a bad neighborhood.

very cool photos ...thanks for sharing the underwater world in your part of the country.

This shore dive is at the outfall pipe into the Pacific ocean from the Hyperion water treatment plant which processes raw sewage, right ?

Yes to both. Still a work in progress, hopefully getting everything next weekend when we go back

The one mile pipe is not in use. It is a backup for the five mile pipe. A few years ago they performed maintenance on the five mile pipe and had to use the one mile pipe temporarily. The flow is twice treated but I still wouldn't want to be near the opening while it was being used. It would be almost as bad as swimming in a public pool. :)
