Another news article mentioned that he got separated from his buddy, who made the subsequent 911 call. That one said he was a scuba diver, but some reporters may not recognize the difference. See Man dies while scuba diving near Point Loma

Eh, this one calls him a scuba diver, too: Scuba diver dies near Point Loma
A scuba diver died after being found unconscious off Point Loma Saturday, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard received a call at 10:55 a.m. that a 73-year-old man who was diving had been found unconscious and unresponsive. The diver had been found off the tide pool area near the sewage treatment plant, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Lifeguards and Coast Guard responded by boat. A lifeguard started CPR on the man, and the Coast Guard transported him by boat to a nearby naval base.

The diver was pronounced dead on the scene. His name has not been released.

The fire department and lifeguards are investigating the incident and interviewing the man’s dive partner.

They said the diver was using a rebreather system.

A rebreather is SCUBA

Hell, a CCR is more SCUBA than OC.

"The acronym was coined by Dr. Christian Lambertsen in 1954. While at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Dr. Lambertsen worked on the first prototypes of rebreathers for military frogmen. He created the Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory Unit, a.k.a the Lambersten Lung. Dr. Lambertsen gave these units the military code name of S.C.U.B.A. as they were a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus."

A little history for others, the acronym was invented for CCR.

Rebreathers were invented before tank diving ( o.c. ) WWII Italian and Britsh Navy frogmen used them before tanks came along.

Rebreather dives were first made late in the 1800's.

A Friendly Reminder...

This thread is about an unfortunate dive accident, not the history of rebreathers and the SCUBA acronym.

Thank god for the history lesson or this thread would be buried deep by now.
