William Ernest Brown of Poway was diving in the ocean with a friend when the two became separated Saturday morning, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Just before 11 a.m., Brown was found unresponsive in the water near the Point Loma Tide Pools, according to the Coast Guard. He was taken to Naval Base-Point Loma, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.

A ruling on Brown’s cause of death remained pending Wednesday afternoon.
