I was positive it was a shark. My dive buddy (who has done the oil rigs many times) signaled it was a cobia, and to shoot... so I did.
Oops... shot a shark spearfishing the oil rigs.

It apparently glanced off of him - he was at the very outer range of the gun. Probably for the best, or I'd be lunchmeat right now.

I couldn't see anything but it probably scared the **** out of him when you hit him.
otoh, having an angry wounded shark on a line you';re also attached to is never a good thing...lol

I also shot a bull Shark, swimming at a distance with couple of cobia. Tried to get a clear shot, but Cobes were tight up against the sides of the shark. Pulled the trigger & missed got the Bull in the side. Not fun for a few seconds, but luckily the spear pulled out.

a cobia looks rather distinct from a shark. if you want you can watch my 2 videos "top 100 saltwater gamefish". They have very little views, but are actually quite worth watching...
