I've always used a right angled arm with fist, pumping up and down; the old infantry "form on me" signal. Then a big ok when you make eye contact.
 
I would have done the same thing except kept the smb on the surface and towed it toward the boat. If the crew is at mooring, sees a diver ascend and then descend and tow the float toward the boat, they should not be unnecessairly concerned.
 
And don't forget the universal signal for distress.
