The miracle of modern instruction ...
--- and she will dive among some of you...

@drbill do your duty as the Dive Park mayor and resident greeter...
sdm

Yes, beyond your vortex perhaps during a drift dive there will be a lead diver
and then another diver bringing up the rear, each with a Safety Sausage Sam.

because this and safety stop, are the childish terms chosen for simpletonicity

Your initial post has generated with this response 52 postings ! You are on a record run rivaling my Chicago diving friend @Marie13 - and that is OK ! it is acceptable and human nature to inquire about the unknown. (FYI @Marie13 has become one heck of a diver!)

Please continue to inquire- ask as many and any and all questions as they arise.. Some answers will be succinct and right to the point responding to all your questions-- And others ?

It has become painfully apparent that modern instruction and the initial unaccompanied diving after certification can be, and is often a traumatic apprehensive event. I sincerely hope, with all the unsolicited and solicited advice that your dive at the Dive Park will be a pleasant one.

As previously stated perhaps good ole @drbill, the mayor and official Dive Park greeter will be on hand to provided a hand and answer any last minute questions.

Good luck, good diving - now and for many years in the future

True, although some inflation methods seem to work much better, some are better suited for tying a reel to, etc

I used an SMB for a while that had the open bottom, designed to fill with a regulator. It tended to flop around and was rather difficult to fill and deploy. So a few months ago I got an oral inflate SMB/DSMB with a cool one way valve- you don't need to even push it with your teeth while blowing into it. Much easier to use.

As far as clipping a reel to it? All you need is some sort of attachment near the bottom, nothing more. That much being said I guess there are some SMBs that are made without any place to clip off to and I would avoid those even if you don't intend to ever deploy it from depth.

I've heard too many stories of trying to deploy the open bottom ones from underwater and the open bottom just scooping up water when not under tension from a reel. Definitely not a good deployable option. Granted, it could have been operator error.

If you're in shape to dive, the walk from the ferry to the dive park isn't bad. Just stroll along. However, if you're going to stop at a dive shop in town on the way, you could borrow one of their wheeled handcarts. Also, sometimes those shops will say they'll be open but won't be, or you'll hear they have a stand out at the dive park but it turns out they don't that day. Communicate in advance if you'll need dive shop services.

Inside the park there are no boats and no need to have a SMB. If you have one already by all means bring it. But for a boatless environment where you can can't get very far from shore the lack of a SMB, which was optional in the first place, should not be a reason not to dive. Go dive and have a good time.

I think that should be modified slightly to say usually no boats. I've experienced them racing overhead in the park a number of times.

As for using an SMB, I never use mine in the dive park. I certainly don't find one necessary there. I do use one on trips to international dive destinations and occasionally at other Catalina sites such as Farnsworth Bank where you are well off-shore.
