All of us think that the environment in Indo is worth preserving, if only for our own self-interest in bering able to enjoy it above and below the water. it certainly is something special on this Earth.

Not too many of us believe that the Indo government is a good caretaker of it.

Are there any NGOs or environmental organizations in Indo that we have reason to believe are effective at pushing the government (national and / or local) to do the right thing? Or that are doing something useful themselves? Because I'm sure many of us would like to support such organizations.

Of course there are the large NGOs like Greenpeace and the like, but I am particularly interested in any that may be local and who some of us may know to be effective?

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks, but I was wondering is anyone on the list (especially those who live in the country) have any specific experience to bring to bear.

Our own Sawai Ecotourism Foundation tries to improve both Education and Conservation. At the moment we run four Kindergarten and one adult education center. The Kindergarten are completely free for the kids. In our schools we pay as much attention as we can to a life in peace with the environment. Our conservation efforts include the purchase of 900 hectares primary forest at Halmahera, a sea turtle protection project and several other activities. 95% of the funding is coming from our 3 resorts and donations from our guests. Further we do what we can to push, pull and lobby within the local administrations. Our biggest "headache" at the moment is how the get a better legal status for our forest. But, we are working on it. Big help would be to have somebody taking care of our website and other media. Nobody of us is capable to do that and we cannot effort paid assistance.
At Rob Sinke you can get an impression of our activities.

I get regular updates from the Turtle Foundation, who assist with projects in Indonesia. They work with profauna.net who's website has quite a lot of information about differnt campaigns in Indonesia, including this one: Turtle conservation, belambangan island, east Kalimantan.

Good to know that. Thanks for the link. I plan to lead a group of 14 divers to dive in Sangalaki, Kakaban & Maratua in August 2021. We have 1 day in Berau. We may visit Belambangan island if possible.
