You'll get no argument from me that it's expensive compared to local service almost anywhere in the world. But when Verizon is charging $5-$10 per day over your normal plan to roam and Google charges nothing, it's worth considering if you want minimum hassle and to keep your number. A lot depends on how much data you use. If you download apps and offline Google Maps ahead of time, avoid streaming media, and use WiFi where available, you can really reduce your data use.
