I have a DS51 strobe for my Olympus TG-5 rig and I have already lost a diffuser on my penultimate dive trip and on my most recent dive trip, the replacement started to separate and float off (luckily I caught it and stuffed in my my wetsuit!) after 10 dives. Has anyone come up with a DIY solution to keep them on? It seems that if the diffusers are tapped by any force, they start to pop off.

The DS51 filters are just held on by those two plastic prongs.
One thing you can do is trim them shorter so they are less likely to be bumped, but the best is to also drill 2 small holes through the filter near the edge, and tie a small string on, then tie the other end of the string to the ball mount stem. This way when they do fall off, they don't float away. I have a pair that are held on by a nicely tied fishing line with stainless fishing snap, and others that are tied on with a string from my safety spools, doesn't have to look nice or fancy, just has to hold the darn things on.

Does it have drain holes you can thread a thin leash through, and around the mount fitting? I seem to recall the Ikelite diffusers all had a habit of the holding tabs becoming weak as the plastic hinges got worked.

Here’s my solution:

Buy a 3 inch no hub coupling from Home Depot. The coupling has a lid inside, which will be used to hold the diffuser in place.

Take one of the stainless steel clamp from the fastener. You will use to secure the diffuser holder.

Cut the coupling to remove the extra material. I used a Dremel to do this.
