I'll be in Key Largo on Christmas day and after and heard that it's called "Hell Week" at the dive shops. I called last month and one shop told me booking in early December is fine, no need to do it sooner.

I've also heard the weather in winter is sketchy and so I'm wondering about weather cancellations. If you book in advance and the boat can't go, do you pay anyway? Is it risky to think that you can book a boat the day before?

Any advice regarding bookings around xmas are much appreciated.

I have gone during Christmas week and had a great time. Dive shops are obviously closed Christmas day (at least mine is) and the weather is hit and miss, but usually still a great time with great diving. Book early for everything yes!

The 4 boats I have dove in Key Largo all had sane cancelation policies. Something like 24 hours so safe to book ahead. My experience has been that for the shallow reef dives they tend to be on the conservative side in going out. Note that the gulf stream tends to get rougher than the reef so if you check weather be sure you are checking for the reef, usually Molasses.
