Yes indeed! I've been known to do both. But some folk have trouble equalizing if they are in a head down position. Happy to say I'm not one of them.

That is my problem at times for the first few meters
 
I’ve had vertigo on ascent from depth. It was a night dive and I had several very unpleasant minutes on the surface before it passed and I felt pretty sh*tty on the drive home. If your ears do do not equalize evenly, it can be pretty unpleasant. Cold water in one ear can do it, too. The good news is that it may never happen again. I wouldn’t discount food poisoning, that would stick with you a good 12 hours.
