should it be on your back strapped to main cylinder or is it better to hang it on your side / front on bcd d rings where you can see the gauge on its 1st stage reg
For me, I side sling it on the right. Keeps it clear of the Octo coming from the left (only us Brits tend to do this), also when RIB diving I can unclip it and hand it up before the main rig. Also less weight on my back.

The landfill.
Pretty narrow minded.... not your thing. But that’s what’s great about diving lots of different styles, desires, dive sites and goals.

Depends on what you're doing. I film so I have mine strapped to my main cylinder so it doesn't drag along the substrate and stir it up. If you stay midwater, slinging it should be fine.

For the benefit of Americans the reason I asked this question is because for at least some of my diving I,ands the other divers I am with are now required to carry a pony bottle instead of relying on another divers octopus. This is to prevent spread of covid - 19. I do not know how widespread this practice is yet but the day after I ordered my pony bottle the supplier phoned to apologize for being out of stock due to a lot of divers buying them. I have only used a (hired) pony a few times before and on those occasions it was slung on my d rings, where I could see the button pressure gauge and operate the valve.

I sling mine when I use it but most of the time I leave it in the car.

Sling it under your left arm. If you attach it to your tank, it'll throw off your trim and tend to roll you to the side it's on (assuming you're not using something as useless as a 6 cf bottle). Also, if you're going to go this route, consider diving this rig on every single dive and lose the octopus on your primary regulator.
