Suunto Stinger

I've been looking at a new computer, and I like the Suunto Stinger, mainly because of it's small size and clear display. Those of you that have used one, what do you think of it?

Hi there,

I use a Stinger it's a great computer but does not offer air integration and some more advanced features.

I like it but I think there are a whole bunch of new computers that offer the same features and in some cases cheaper. Also used the Citizen Aqualand and I rate that pretty highly too.

Suunto also do the Vyper which has more standard computer styling but offers enhanced features like the air integration option.

My Stinger is mostly used as a simple gauge, but I do like it ... small enough to wear as a watch when traveling to dive.

The display, however, is NOT the greatest... It's fine when viewed straight-on, but when viewed at an angle, all segmants show up on the LCD, even the ones that are supposed to be "off" ... a minor annoyance, but nevertheless, for the price, I'd think they could spring for a higher quality display.

The Stinger has great functionality, in my opinion, but in cold water diving, (which is the bulk of what I do), it's better to have a larger unit. I ended up trading mine in for the Vyper, which is easier to use with thick gloves. .

Vyper. I prefer the larger display.

My Stinger spends most of its time as a backup bottom timer. I'll use it as a computer if I'm in the Carribean or when I'm working classes.

I absolutely love it. I'm especially fond of the second timer and the log feature. The display is easy to comprehend. While the size is not an issue for me, I can see where people might like a bigger one. OTOH, I like the fact that I can wear it as a watch on vacation.

The fact that it is not air integrated is a plus in my book.

I don't have major issues with the buttons, but, once again, I can see where people might like larger ones.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

I like the Vyper as the display is so much clearer. But then I use the Vyper as a backup to the Cobra.

Have had my stinger for a year now. Have some minor issues: 1) Audible warning is a little weak and 2) I experienced "rust" on the metal, although I was told that it might have been "organic material" trapped in the seams of the watch face/bezel (or whatever you call it).

I was told that the Vyper is a more reliable dive computer (vs. Stinger). Bought my wife a Vyper and no complaints yet.

I've been using a Stinger since May 2002 on over 200 dives. Have had no issues whatsoever. Had to get the battery replaced last year.
Only thing I have done is to replace the strap with a Waterborne strap - works better over exposure suits and is more secure as it captures both pins of the watch.
