Below is an old video of navy divers with surface supply. Towards the end the depth limits are listed. Little over half way a sailor uses cigarette smoke to check a valve.

This was standard procedure when I went through Navy diving schools. In case it isn't clear, this is why ensuring the check valve is working properly.


It is even more important on lightweight surface supplied hats because a failed check valve and open umbilical hose will allow the bailout bottle to leak out.

Problem is that cigarettes are like $.50 each nowadays. Really adds to the cost of diving.

I usually use a cigar.
