In videos from hawai i saw that type of black barracuda before.
Looks cool.

Not sure if its a special species.
In bonaire a saw a old scarred, fat barracuda that was really dark aswell.

On this photo it doesnt look that dark, because of the light. But it was nearly black

I was in Cozumel in December and saw a large barracuda at a cleaning station. He was a dark smoky color, not the bright silver of the other barracuda I’d seen in open water. Is it possible that they change color while being cleaned, maybe to signal the wrasse that it’s ok?

Juveniles can change their color, not sure if adults can.
This might be possible!

I just looked it up.
The great barracuda can change color to camouflage.
That might explain why the same barracuda on my pictures seems to have different colors.

They are in a "vulnerable" position out in the open for cleaning, and will exhibit a dark doninant visible color. It says: "See me? I'm a barracuda, and I'm right here!" Nothing to hide from like when thay are in hunting mode and wanting to be stealth.

Light angles will also play a role .

Looks like a barracuda. 98%

I would like some help identifying this black long fish in the middle left of the photo. I didn’t see this until I looked at photo carefully. It’s taken from Olowalu, Maui. I tried to do a google search but didn’t find anything. Thanks![/QUOTE]

I like that photo. Nice to see the yellow tangs; having seen them in pet stores, I wondered where they lived in the wild. I haven't dove Hawaii; I agree that looks like the barracuda I see in the Caribbean and Florida. I've seen one change color and pattern; saw one with blotches basically turn them off.

And they can look unusual. A few years back I posted a pic of a big one from Bonaire on the forum and asked what it was. People said barracuda. I was like 'But it's fat! That thing's obese! I've never seen a fat barracuda.'

Well...now I have.
Nature never ceases to surprise me. Fish can change sex and color whenever they want, it’s amazing!
