I had a chance last week to dive yet another wreck at Catalina that is very rarely visited and also has an interesting backstory.
The Vashon is a fishing vessel on the backside of the island that sank in July 1949 after an explosion in the engine room and it burned to the waterline. A few others have dove The Vashon but, as far as I know, nobody really knew the whole history of the ship.
The really interesting history that I discovered during my initial research is that The Vashon was also used as a minesweeper in WW2 (USS Cockatoo) and was stationed in Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, 1941.
Yep, right here in our beautiful SoCal backyard is a ship from Pearl Harbor.
Thanks to @California Diver for help with the research. The full story and pictures are here:
USS Cockatoo (AMc 8) / The Vashon (Catalina — 150 fsw)
More projects are in the queue....
