Interesting that when locked up, folks went fishing with lots of newly purchased gear.

Well, as long as they don't have a European style lockdown, you can easily find a fishing hole nearby to fish almost anywhere in the US. You don't need training either. For some, just drinking beer all day out in nature makes for a good day. Gives plenty of time to come up with stories on the one that go away.

If they decided to dive locally they sure didn't buy much new gear.

# of fishing opportunies eclipses the number of dive spots.

Plus the barrier to go fishing is relatively low.

EDIT: I'll add that the overhead for fishing is also much lower.
