difficulty hearing things underwater?

Consider that you may also have hearing loss and think about having your hearing tested. I can't hear alarms, tank bangs, etc. I have moderate hearing loss and use hearing aids on land.
 
No alarms for me, got visual reminder alarms like po2 and ndl. But not really needed, just to highlight something, when I might be narced a bit.

With a 7mm I can hear bubbles if near.
With 9 or 11 mm it's silence, barely can hear my own bubbles.

It's not a problem. Boats are quit load underwater, so I guess it's still possible to hear them with a thick hood.
