I have an opportunity to purchase a Bauer MIIV-E1. 7.5 HP, single phase, 5000 PSI, 8.4 cf/m, about 18 years old, but 550 hours. $3500...good deal?

Even with rebuild it deserves after that amount of time it not bad at all.

At 550 hrs it won't need a rebuild. As you probably don't know what oil was used in it you should do 3 oil changes according to the following schedule:

Buy new synthetic oil, run the compressor for just a few minutes in order to warm the oil up and then do the 1st oil change.
Run the compressor for around 10 hours and then do the 2nd oil change while the oil is warm.
Now you can use the compressor for a while, but the 3rd oil change is due somewhere between 20 and 50 hours.
After the 3rd oil change, you can go back to the reccommended intervalls of 1000 hrs or every 2 years (whichever is less).
Don't ever let the compressor freeze in the winter!

I wouldn't touch anything that's not fully enclosed, same money, for far less of that mind exploding ear smashing noise

That unit is a bargain for the price.
As Michael says, 550 hours is nothing for these pumps which are designed for around 30,000 hours. You can check the type of oil in it by putting a bit on a rag and shine a uv light on it .....if it fluoresces, it's mineral oil and you can follow Michael's suggestion to convert to synthetic oil.

The IK120 pump runs quieter than a K14 so noise is not a problem and the P2 filter tower is good for more than 15000 cycles so at 4 cycles per hour for 550 hours is only 2200 cycles.

I've got those, quieter like 500 rubbish bin lids banging together instead of 1000 rubbish bin lids banging together

But then theres the IK120 block in a magnificent Mini Verticus box that doesnt come with any rubbish bin lids at all

Steel rubbish bin lids!
