Why would a shop change from PADI to SSI affiliation?

I think that the answer is 'it depends'. To go from a Scuba Diver cert to a full Open Water Cert, student must complete the rest of the knowledge reviews (sections 4 & 5), rest of the confined water skills (confined dives 4 & 5 skills, continuous swim, and any of the dive-flexible skills not...

    Rescue type question

""I than watched her signal her buddy that she had 70Bar left in her tank."" "the dive brief was to ascend and conduct a safety stop, deploy DSMB, and then surface once your guage indicated 50 bar." Maybe I'm missing something, but when you intervened, she wasn't out of air and wasn't out of...

    Cocoview regulars.....packing list????

What Doc & Bob said plus ... Bug spray yes -- but about the best I've found was bought there. Layout the clothes that you think that you will need for a week. And put 1/2 of them back in your closet. All that you'll need is a couple of pairs of shorts, shirts, swim suits, one long pair pants...

Implications of diving below sea level

Was watching a show on the Dead Sea and got to thinking about the effects of diving there (& any other below sea level locations). Online sources talk about full face masks for protection against salt in eyes, need to rinse gear extremely well, etc. But none address the effect of change in...

Compass Navigation run on obtuse triangle

Check out 'navfinders' as used in PADI's underwater navigation specialty course. Use that tool to track your kick-cycles and directions.

    CCV overwater- bungalow or cabana?

Have stayed in both cabanas and bungalows. Better breeze through the cabanas (didn't need AC in the height of summer) Also cabanas seem to get more of the soothing reef noise while bungalows seem to get more clubhouse sounds

    Safety Stop Thoughts...

Your entire class -- book work, confined water, open water certification dives is conducted over 1 weekend? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?

Written Checklist vs. Avoiding Shortcuts & Mistakes from Memory/Rushing

Hello Fred ... I believe that there is a check list for common items to be packed for a trip in the English language OW Manual and in the PADI logbook (although to be honest, I'm not 100% since the manual was revised this year). As far as check list before the dive, you may want to redo you...

    Risk a Liveaboard

Welcome Derffie Its a great step to go out on your own. Commendations for that. Consider CoCoView on Roatan Island. We've been down there several times. Good staff, well run operation. You dive with the save dive professionals & boat crew all week. Usually will be with the same group of...

    Training Dives at Dutch Springs

As a courtesy you may want to stop by first & talk to the observers to let them know what you are doing.

Visiting the NE from Germany - Questions about buddies and gear

Guten Tag dive_turkey. A consideration will be that your regulator is most likely set up for DIN. You will need to temporarily remove the insert on any flasks that you rent in the states. Viel Spass Tauchen

Any deep quarries in DC/VA/MD area?

There are no local dive shops at Storm. As Jim and others have said, you need a watercraft of some sort -- boat or kayak. We did a couple of dives last summer. The platforms and attractions had pretty well deteriorated, but the various maps that you find online are reasonably accurate. Note...

    Hampton Roads Dive certification...

Welcom Typsy -- both to the board & to the sport. We've done a couple of dives with Lynnhaven, not certified through them, but they have impressed us. Spoken with but not dove with some of the others in Tidewater, didn't feed the same 'click' with them either over the phone or in person that...

Weight belt vs. BC integrated weights in an emergency

Either or is best depending upon WHICH ONE YOU PRACTICE WITH One concern I have with integrated is, as stated by others above, they may fall out it not properly installed. That being said, I prefer to dive integrated (but frequently practice removal on a platform with my buddy) Concerns that...

    Always water in my mask

I've know of people having mask leaks if they exhale through their nose. Ask your instructor to observe and see if could be a cause

Admission vs scuba fee at Dutch Springs?

If at all possible, consider going during the week. Frau & I go there then and usually only a few divers -- occasionally we have the quarry to ourselves. Less muck stirred up from mud-puppies and no collisions with out of control divers. Downside is though that there are less eyes watching...

First Time to CCV with Wife & jr divers

We've been to CCV with youngins from others our group ranging from just certified jr divers through late teens. All were there to dive and made use of the shore dive (the Front Yard and the upper reaches of the Prince Albert is well within jr depth livings) as well as the shallower boat dives...

First Time - Out on your own?

3 whole weeks since you've been certified .... and your not diving yet?????? [just kidding] Going out on your own is fun / scary. Perhaps talk with your instructor or LDS to see who else may be wanting to go out and make it a small group. There seems to be a lot of people who get certified...

Filling your own tanks on a small boat

Since you mention using this to fill on a boat, be very cautious of the effect of sucking your boat engine's fumes. CO is a bad thing to get into your tanks I'd second what the Captain said as far as what your best option would be
