Be weary of seven gill sharks !

Come to New York as a tourist, and try sticking your camera in some big dude's mouth on the subway, then tell me which species is more dangerous. Just like the Discovery Channel you can claim to do it for science.

    Lighting + Filter Question

Santa was extremely nice and I got lights for underwater video, and I also got a magenta filter. A question: If I have sufficient lights, is there a benefits or drawbacks of also using a filter at the same time?

    Why Aren't There Scuba Celebrities?

Perhaps there should be a reality tv show where a rag-tag group of divers (selected exclusively for personal conflicts, drama, and photogenic qualities) are assembled to dive various locations around the world, bicker over proper placement of gear, fall in and out of love, and make "private...

Why Spearfishing is an advanced Activity

What is the best scuba diving novel you've ever read?

+1 for both Shadow Divers and Raising the Dead. I found Shadow Divers more of a fun read, while Raising the Dead was more emotionally compelling. After reading Raising the Dead I then happened to stumble upon the video retrieved from Shaw's camera videotaping the recovery... quite an impact...

    Future of DiveShops?

I have to agree with this, but then there are those situations (that occur too often in many industries) of the "customer" who comes in all smiles, utilizes your customer service and face-to-face expertise, tries on products, asks questions, thanks you for your friendly service and leaves...

Night Diving - love or hate?

I really enjoy night dives - different critters are out and about and it really does make a known site seem different. It can be a bit spooky though... and can mean a late night clean-up... but I think it's well worth it once you're comfortable.

    Learning Marine Life

I have picked up two different books for identifying East Coast fish: Peterson Field Guides: Atlantic Coast Fishes by Robins, Ray & Douglass as well as A Field Guide to Coastal Fishes from Maine to Texas by Kells & Carpenter. Of the two of these I prefer the book by Kells & Carpenter as the...

Diver saved after ray sting - New Zealand

Wow - glad he made it through and have to third the fantastic attitude. Asking for future reference: Is there a benefit to staying in the water in a situation like this?

    Ponquogue Bridge Town Trustees Meeting

The last time I was out there (Oct 13th) workers were installing a fence to keep the fishermen off the bridge. I have heard that the area is now closed to SCUBA divers (I have not traveled out there lately so I can not verify as to signage or what-not). Sad times, my friends. Sad times. If...

How to handle violation of a dive site rules (Solo Diving)

Not aware of the actual site in question here: is the rule just posted on a sign, or does the owner have someone who regularly enforces the rules? I am not saying that lack of official enforcement is cause for breaking said rule, but it could indicate a pure concern for protection from liability...

    Advanced Open Water?

I agree completely with this. My final AOW dive was my 67th dive. Many of the skills that you develop in these classes will immediately benefit your diving, but you will still have many more skills to develop.

    Death at Dutch Springs

Two in as many months, very sad indeed. My condolences to the family and best wishes to all involved.

    SMB Question

For those of you that carry and practice with an SMB, do you deploy with a finger spool or a reel? I've been using a finger spool but I've heard from some other divers that I should be using a reel (which I do not own yet and think may be overkill).

    Shore dive buckle fun

Honestly, I've been diving with these fins since I was certified 8 years ago. There is only one dive spot where I have had this problem. I believe it is due to the surf + pitch of the shore + small pebble content. Since I will be diving this site frequently... spring straps on!
