We are saddened at the passing of Paul Austin aka "Claretwine"

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I posted the story of Paul's last dive here on scubaboard. http://www.scubaboard.com/t60825.html If the link doesn't work properly, search for "memoriam"

In Memoriam: Paul B. Austin -- Part 1

I heard my brother yell “Help!” and turned my head and body almost 180 degrees to face him, thinking “what’s up? Is he trying to attract a lift back to the boat?” He was less than 10 feet from me. As I turned, he said loudly “I can’t breathe!” His head was out of the water. I responded...

In Memoriam: Paul B. Austin -- Part 1

Our last dive – in memoriam – Paul B. Austin On the morning of the 28th of May, my brother, Paul, and I were starting the sixth day of a 7 day live-aboard dive trip to Exuma. It was promising to be another great Bahamian day– sunny, bright, 92 or so degrees (F – or about 33 degrees C). The...

    Pony bottle setup/config

I dive with a pony, some of the time. 19 cu ft bottle, attached to my tank strap via (separable) aluminum blocks, peanut size SPG on the first stage, install my octy second stage, mount second stage on my chest (just like I do when I'm diving without the pony). I use the pony if (1) I'm...

Are Hoseless Wrist Computer good or safe?

I did and it works great (went from Suunto Cobra with Stinger backup to Suunto Vytec with Stinger backup).

    Pony Bottle Configuration

I "dive doubles" too, only mine are asymmetrical, one's 19 cu ft, the other's a 95 ... Same reasons as you... Particularly important when diving with a SOB or solo...

    Headache after a Dive

    Need SeaFever Critique

I did a trip with them last year (Bimini itinerary). I had a blast. Liked it so much, I've booked another trip on them this July (they have some openings two different weeks in July and will likely discount to guarantee a more full boat). I've done other boats (e.g., Hughes Wind Dancer)...

    Muscle mass and air consumption

.59 to .7 strikes me as decent but it depends on conditions. Under some conditions (and equipment and other variables), it's great; under others, it's a bit high. Consider: If you're diving in green water, high current, swell, with a wicked thermocline (and lotsa neoprene) and carrying a...

Air: Is it really only for tires?

I use Nitrox (typically EAN32) on air tables to give me an extra margin of safety. Couldn't find that on the poll...

Air: Is it really only for tires?

If I remember my HS chemistry, Nitrogen has an atomic weight of 14 while Oxygen has an atomic weight of 16. Doesn't that mean that filling a tire to a constant pressure with 100% N2 will weigh 12.5% less than filling it to a constant pressure with 100% O2? ???

    Air Hog

It took me 50-60 dives to get my air consumption way down. What really did it was: 1. Chillin out...being really relaxed underwater (but not unconscious...) 2. Bouyancy training (part of my AOW course) -- getting my trim right, including... 3. Getting the lead out! Overweighting kills your...

    Liveaboard in Feb or March

Since you're in Boston, if you don't want to travel half way around the world, consider some closer liveaboards: I did Turks and Caicos with Peter Hughes. Very, very good trip. 1. I LOVED the diving (and crew and fellow divers) on the Sea Fever out of Miami. Dove the Bahamas (Bimini area...

Kelly's on the Bay - Key Largo

There were maybe 22 divers on the boat. 2 tank dive. First dive -- max depth almost 100 feet. My buddy and I were the last up from the dive. They relocated to a 50 foot dive and were getting ready to push folks in with only a 25 minute SI... We (buddy and I) made it clear the SI was too...

    Urgent!!! Masks!

There are two types of faces, those that work with any mask (no leaks) and those that are sufficiently different that they don't work with most masks... I, unfortunately, am in the latter class. Most masks will leak under pressure for me, right by the far corners of my eyes (issue of cheek...

    Diving in keys in Feb.

Stayed there in August 02 Nice rooms. Clean. Large, etc. Safe Don't know how they compare to the other hotels at MM100 (Key Largo) but I suspect they're not among the most expensive. There was another place right behind the Marina Del Mar (i.e., 100 feet away from the lagoon; the Marina...
