Umbilical severed at 80 meters in North Sea

After visiting with my marine vessel people, it appears DP I and II that we use tend to go "offsite" more often than not. As a matter of practice DP is not allowed for some critical operations due to inherent issues. In these situations the captains are required to manually control the vessel...

Umbilical severed at 80 meters in North Sea

I am going to take a poll of our marine vessel people to find out how often we have had any type of DP I or II go "off site" and how far they had to go. I would assume, it doesnt happen often.

Umbilical severed at 80 meters in North Sea

This has been a great read, for the Rec. Tec. and a fellow offshore worker point of view. Cool heads survive. Does anyone know if the DSP (Dive Support Vessel) was DP1 or DP2? We have both, with which the DP2 have two systems which allow the crew to select the "working one" in an incident.

2 more upper keys dive fatalities, 8/6/2011

I believe the sign is on the southbound side of US1 in Key Largo, stating "Your life is worth more than a lobster" or something to that effect. We were bug hunting in the Marathon area, when all that went down, we listened to parts of it on the radio also. All the radio chatter talked about 3...

    Key West Spear Diver

Could have been also. CNS hits and AGE both manifest after rapid ascents. I assumed a good CESA, after all "he was an experianced diver". After re reading, it was obvious the skin diver could tell the ascent was too fast, AGE is very possible. I have been doing too many deco and gas models...

UK: Man dies after rapid ascent from 60metres dive off Salcombe

It is possible that I missed it, but do we know how healthy this guy appeared before the dive? What gas was the diver using? What equipment OC or rebreather? 60 meters is in the severe narc range for me on air. I prefer to mix when I plan on >160'.

    Roatan dive sites

Some of my most interesting dives on the Southside have been in less than 20'. The southside is a very unique place to dive. You will have new respect for the word "Macro" if you spend your time wisely. On another note, One evening I visited with two guys that had come from a short...

Dive Buddy did not surface with me

For the original OP, I do two kinds of diving. One with the group where I will buddy up and make sure the group has their sh*t together. Two, Spear Guns and/or cameras. When either of these are in my hands, I am solo diving. I will not do this with a group, and I will typically look...

Oil Diver Dies In Gulf Of Mexico Oil Rig

Don, For referance, the vessel is the Norman Clipper, it is a DSV. In the past I have seen as many as 16 sat divers working on the vessel with 2 chambers and 2 diving bells. At the time it also had a Dive Specialist ( I am not sure if it was a full blown MD) on board. I...

Deco on Dives in Coz? Educate Me

For referance, I dove my oceanic atom 2 into deco last week at 150'. I had no deco obligation at the end of my dive before I got to my safety stop. I still did a long safety stop, I am not a fan of leaving 800 psi in my tank at the end of my safety stop. I prefer to suck it down and deco a...

It is NOT the Gulf Oil Spill

It is rare when the Oil company owns the rig, those days have gone by. The Deepwater Horizon is owned by Transocean, working for BP. BP had people on board the rig. The majority of the basic drilling work is done by Transocean employees, there are some specialized work that is typically done...

It is NOT the Gulf Oil Spill

So you had 1.5 Million/day dollars worth of drilling rigs standing by at your place on April 20th? You do realize that those 4 vessels were all at work somewhere else at that time. I would be surprised if it didnt cost several million dollars per vessel just to get them mobilized. Dont...

    BP Oil Disaster

I have stopped individuals from minor things (lack of PPE) to process (simultaneous ops) due to no full time detection. I work for a company that believes in "Safety is Not Negotiable". The fact that hours of discussion took place leads me to believe someone exercised the Stop Work. I...

    BP Oil Disaster

I can see after watching the media spin how an industry can be painted incorrectly, do not judge an entire industry on reports. I have a very good friend that worked on the shuttle project; I saw the same microscope put on the space industry by the media post Challenger. P.S. Who was over...

    BP Oil Disaster

Sounds eerily familiar doesnt it. NASA, Challenger, Cold Weather, O rings, hmmmm. Proves once again that people do what you inspect and not what you expect.

    BP Oil Disaster

There was more wrong with the BOP than the dead battery. A little birdie, who might work for the BOP man, told me "The unit hadnt been in the man.'s shop for recertification in almost 10 years." Someone has a "Get out from under the bus" card in their pocket. I agree that criminal...

    BP Oil Disaster

It isnt as simple as a jump start, it requires removal of the control pod, taking it to the surface, repair, and reinstallation. That is what they recently did before the "top kill" began. The offloading of the backside with sea water is similar to standing on an active railroad track and...
