Ready to jump into Seattle diving

Wow, thanks for the advice, folks! Sorry for the delay in getting back, got a bit busy here :/ I will check in over at NWDC in due time. As for location, I'm in West Seattle so a quick drive to Alki Beach and apparently everything else. Once I get my gear squared away I'll be able to dive just...

Ready to jump into Seattle diving

Greetings, all! I've been out of the water for a few years due to moving about but I am settled here in Seattle and almost ready to jump back in with both fins. My background: dove steadily for over a year in Hawaii doing some reasonably demanding dives from shore and boat PADI OW/AOW and...

Minimalist versus "Train as you Fight" . . . Which way do you go?

Wow...this is scuba, folks. Not Combat. Adaptability is the key to survival when bullets start flying: gear changes, weapons jam, and folks die so you need to be able to adapt to changing circumstances and overcome them. Having had the opportunity to "train" on a weapon system 10 minutes before...

Help a Newbie out with some gear advice

If you're located in Rockville, are you planning on taking your classes from Bob Sherwood? If so, I would definitely talk to Bob (and probably talk to him anyways) as he is exceptionally knowledgeable about the DIR configuration and dive gear in general (as I found out a few weekend ago upon my...

Are you happy with your Aeris Elite T3?

I've been using my Aeris Elite T3 for over a year now and I really like it. The AI is surprisingly functional, and even if I do lose signal I've got an SPG so it's no biggie. I also recommend the DSS Bungee mount: a very nice accessory. Peace, Greg

Purchasing Doubles and need some advice from DIR'ers

For warm-water diving, regular Luxfer AL80s work fine. I hear the Catalinas are a bit better for backgas, but that they aren't as nice for stage bottles. I'd say go with whichever set you get cheaper and be happy, you can always sell AL80s, singled or doubled. Peace, Greg

    Rescue of DIR style Diver

If your harness is sized properly, then your backplate will remain very much attached to you. It takes a bit of work to ditch and don a BP/W at depth (done it, it was nasty) since the shoulder straps do hold on to your torso quite well. Unhooking the crotch strap will mostly cause your rig to...

School me on tanks and canister lights

In addition to what others have stated, I would like to mention for the OP's sake that different tanks will trim differently in the water. HP120s tend to be very tail-heavy, HP80s are more head-heavy due to their lack of length. Cubic footage is nice, but it starts to get annoying when your...

Why No Fundies for DIR Agnostics

Being vertical actually makes it harder to control your position in the water (all 3 dimensions) and it's more than likely that at least one diver in an OOG situation will be having bouyancy issues. If you continually practice OOG being horizontal and neutrally bouyant (thus in control) then it...

Why No Fundies for DIR Agnostics

The main difference between the other agencies and GUE is that, due to the strict agency-wide standardization, one can reasonably assume that a Fundies class in Hawaii with Jo Hjelm will be very similar to a class in Singapore taught by Gideon Liew, a class in Mexico by one of the ZG guys, or...

Cleaning out some excess gear (Tech/DIR plus more))

Update!! First up is my spare singles rig. It is composed of a no-name Aluminum backplate (Hog/DIR rigged), HOG brand 32-lb wing, and a DR STA w/ DSS cambands. The webbing is cut very fairly large, so it should fit most divers as is. You also don't need need the STA, I am including it because...
