First of all congrats on joining the world of certified divers. Your problems are VERY common to new divers. I've had students with the same problems. Experience will teach you the best way to clear your ears, and how to do the other things you had issues with. Keep diving and keep learning.

Not only do I do buddy checks, but I then check each one of my students and assistants. I want to be sure that everyone is ready to go into the water and be safe, but also that they are ready to enjoy the up coming dive. Buddy checks are a MUST for all divers.

I use steel 100s all of the time, but I never travel with them. Only when I drive to a dive site do I use them. I also use steel double 100s.

Try talking to a DAN Dr. who has experience in the area your talking about. HSA is also a good alternative.

To do the PADI Rescue course you neew EFR or First Adi and CPR from another agenct and 20 logged dives to do the course. You have book work and pool work to do along with open water senarios. The time you spend in the rescue course should be informatiove and fun.
