    Cleaning Bottles

I don't collect bottles with painted labels so I can't help in getting them cleaned but some of the people at this forum can certainly help: http://www.antique-bottles.net/forum/ For cleaning marine encrustations I use heavily diluted muriatic acid.

    Dive Flag Law Again!!

In Maine the traps do have ID tags on them. When I find a washed up trap that is in good shape on the beaches near our summer home I just haul them down to the town pier and let the lobstermen claim their own traps. It's the neighbourly thing to do. I'm not sure that you'd want to try and...

    Dive Flag Law Again!!

Indeed there is no dive flag law in Maine and you can't take lobster while diving either. This (especially the no take law) may explain the rather good relationship divers in Maine have with the lobstermen. There are few if any hassles and in fact we tend to help each other out. Just last...

    Air Fills in Maine

In the Lubec/Eastport area the only air fill station available is on South Lubec Road in Lubec on the way to West Quoddy Head. There is a large dive flag at the end of the driveway indicating the shop in Lubec. The shop has some equipment available too but no rental gear. Neal Fitzsimmons...

    Woods Hole dive report

I've done Garbage Beach many times and would never attempt a long haul out to the wrecks. Boat traffic can be very heavy, not to mention large (man the ferry is loud underwater) and probably more significant is that the currents can rip pretty good. Always remember your quarters for the...

New site for LongIsland Sound fauna.

The University of Connecticut and others have produced a fairly good site on LIS fauna: http://www.lisrc.uconn.edu/lis_uwtour/index.asp Despite living in Connecticut I do my diving farther north in Cape Ann and Downeast Maine.

    The Good Guys Win One

We're still fighting the fight in Passamaquoddy Bay (Maine/New Brunswick) and hopefully the stance of the Canadian government prevents the projects from occurring. The proposed route of the tankers is right through marine mammal feeding grounds, right whales in particular. The Canadians have...

Bottle diving in Eastport, Maine over Thanksgiving. (+img)

A water jet would make life so much easier. Most of the time I have to see a bit of uncovered bottle before I dig. With a water jet I could hit some likely spots and probably uncover more.

Bottle diving in Eastport, Maine over Thanksgiving. (+img)

You indeed have to search a bit nowadays. I can only imagine how much used to be there. However the Motel East owner is really exagerating the many divers thing. I dive there all summer and most three-day weekends and the number of divers this last few years can be counted on two hands and...

Bottle diving in Eastport, Maine over Thanksgiving. (+img)

Thanks. The bottle got a quick bath in diluted muriatic acid to get rid of a tiny bit of encrustation but otherwise no cleaning needed as it was pretty much buried in mud. I'm still researching the history of the company.

Bottle diving in Eastport, Maine over Thanksgiving. (+img)

Did a couple of dives over Thanksgiving weekend in Eastport, Maine at the old steamship pier site. Didn't dive on Thanksgiving proper and due to high winds skipped Friday too. Went down on both Saturday and Sunday though. The visibility was not so good at only 5' to 10' due to the high winds...

Bottle finds from Eastport, Maine this weekend.

You have a great web site. The Newfoundland area is steeped in history and I'm willing to bet that you've been passing over bottles and clay pipes well over a hundred years old. Most of the bottles I find (take) date from 1850 to 1900. I hope to head up your way in the next couple of years...

Bottle finds from Eastport, Maine this weekend.

I generally only take bottles that are 100 years old or more. Most of it is stuff I keep but some stuff I'll sell to collectors.

Bottle finds from Eastport, Maine this weekend.

Eastport, Maine was a very busy port in its day. Nearly the entire shoreline was covered in wharves. Steamships pulled in all the time and dumped their trash which added to the stuff dumped off wharves. Back in the mid to late 1800's it was a very busy place with both industry and tourism...

Bottle finds from Eastport, Maine this weekend.

Traveled the 430 miles to our home in Lubec, Maine and did some dives off Eastport to collect some bottles. I got skunked for the most part on Friday although I did find an old green squat with an iron pontil. Unfortunately about 1/3 of the top was cracked off and since it had no lettering I...

Maybe a bit harsh but not meant to offend anyone. PS - Appreciate the info on Sea Rovers. The website is still stuck on the 2006 show.

Hey I just called him (dad) irresponsible never said he couldn't make the choice. I really could care less what happens to him or his child.

Yes I do, a seven year old and she snorkels and is a fish in the water. She'll dive when she is physically and mentally able. My nephew certified at age 12 when he met both conditions. Why is it irresponsible? How many of you do New England bottle diving? Most likely few if any of those...
