    Diver death in Guam

BREAKING NEWS: Tourist drowns at Outhouse Beach | Pacific Daily News | guampdn.com Very little information on this yet, but a diver was spotted in trouble on the surface...a bystander swam out from the beach, brought him back, and was assisted by another in performing CRP/Mouth to Mouth until...

What are your biggest pet peeves?

Another thing you can do is take one of those little plastic bag-like juice packs along....poke it with a straw, or even gnaw at the corner and take a drink, keeping your finger over the end of the straw to reduce salt water infiltrating into the juice...the longer you take to drink it, the more...

Guam: Man drowns while scuba diving

I agree, it's not really clear. It says there was an instructor with them, but I got the impression it wasn't a class..."invited him to go out diving with some friends." Also unclear is how many, if any (other than the instructor, of course) were certified divers. In this part of the world...

Close Call in Bali - know your DM and Dive Operator very well

Hi LeeAnne, I was just making a general observation...I'm not familiar with the dive site mentioned or the particulars of this accident. But you make a good point.....some sites/conditions are much less "forgiving" and the skill level of the individual diver would need to be higher, reducing...

Close Call in Bali - know your DM and Dive Operator very well

I agree....but the truth is, for many divers a guide/DM is essential to their safety. For divers who are able & inclined to dive often, they are quite easily able to become self-sufficient. In my situation, I'm quite often getting divers who only go on one vacation a year, and that's their...

Yesterday I feel I got lucky.

You've got that right....I've seen divers read both their compass and depth gauge when telling me their air pressure. (I joked with one of them (who was using a metric "bar" gauge where 200 is full) that she was okay as long as she was heading south, because it read "180"....but don't go north...

    Dive Light Battery Explosion

One thing I've done, if the light is already flooded (usually you can see rusty-looking water in it) is to open the light under water.....in a big bucket or whatever....which I think would reduce the chances of acid spraying around or other possible shrapnel. Wouldn't want to do this if the...

    Diving fatality in Guam

About the buddy separation--nothing has been made public on that. Everyone has been interviewed, but I don't know if or when there will be anything published.

    Diving fatality in Guam

I'm the one who brought up the body, and someone (Banyan) mentioned this topic was on Scubaboard & might want to hear firsthand information. Guamrider (I probably know you personally, but not by your screen name?) has everything just about right....the only major correction to his account is...

    Diving fatality in Guam

There are 2 threads on this same topic. I brought her body up after the dive. I'll post on the other thread in case anyone wants to hear at least a little first hand information.

Diving Oahu 11:15am then taking a flight to Kauai the next morning.. will I be okay?

If you're not comfortable flying that soon after the 2nd dive, one option, of course is to just do the 1st dive, then maybe snorkel (conditions permitting) on the 2nd. I've had customers do that now & then in the past.

    Marking my new tanks?

One other more "permanent" suggestion to add to the others....we just use aluminum tanks here, so I don't know if there'd be any difference with steel....you could put your initials or whatever on the tank with one of those metal stamps...a die set, I think it's called? That's what I have on my...

Why close the valve 1/4 or 1/2 turn???

I agree that every diver should check his/her own air....but a lot of them don't. The ocean bottom here on Guam would be COVERED with dead divers if the guides didn't check their customers' air. Other guides who work in areas where many of the divers are infrequent, once or twice per year...

    Diving lessons disappointment

Just one little observation on the mask clearing....I find it better to start exhaling through your nose BEFORE you start looking up, because if you look up without exhaling, there's a tendency for water to get in your nose, and that bothers some people, obviously. You only need to be looking...

    overbreathing a reg

It's certainly possible that there was a problem with your reg, but very often I've found nervous beginning divers who think there's something wrong with it, when in fact, there isn't. Nervousness tends to cause shallow, rapid breathing which makes one feel as if he isn't getting enough air...

    Finally! Colts pays back

With the time difference here, the 2 Sunday afternoon games run about Mon 3am to 11am or so, and the night games would be say 11am to 2 or 3pm....so all of those would be during times I'd normally be sleeping or working. One of the nice things about going home (mainland) in the fall is watching...

    Finally! Colts pays back

Ha ha....good advice, generally....but the TITLE of the thread was "Finally, Colts Pay Back!" I pretty much knew the outcome of the game as soon as I saw that. Oh well. A number of years ago had something like that happen....missed the first Denver Superbowl win on TV, because we were...

    Finally! Colts pays back

AAAAAAAAAAAARGH! Just got home from a day of diving in Guam, relaxing in front of the TV now, watching with great interest the Colts/Patriot game, which I'd taped earlier in the day...no score at 6:39 of the 1st quarter. Made sure not to go to any news/sports websites, hoping to watch the...

Actual ad from Guam Visitors Bureau

Actually did the Tokai/Cormoran yesterday as a beach dive. Had a diver who really wanted to see them, but the boat wasn't going there. This is the 6th time I've done the dive from the beach...it's about a 20~23 minute surface swim to get there, which is why we do it only as a beach dive with...

    Snuba incident

That's brings up a potential problem with SNUBA....with the tank on the surface in a little float, but the divers underwater, it's very difficult to check the air pressure, especially if you have divers with problems who need extra attention. In typical diving, of course, the SPG (pressure...
