Trip report: Kona, May 4-5, Jack's Diving Locker

Most of the folks on the boats are visitors on vacation, thus weekdays are just as good as weekends. I have never noted much difference in the crowd.

Possibility of regulation of Kona's manta ray dive on front page of West Hawaii Today

However well intended by those urging regulations all I see is disaster for the local dive ops. I have yet to witness DLNR do anything right in this sort of situation. The kayak rentals and tours at Kealakekua, the harbors at Honokohau and Kawaihae, the disgrace that is Mauna Kea State Park...

Dive Boat Operator Abandons Divers in the Water?

I would love to hear the rest of this tale... Hawai'i Police media release... (Boater arrested for DUI 03-07-14) At 10:13 p.m. Wednesday (March 5), the U.S. Coast Guard notified police that a commercial dive boat and its operator had been reported missing. Another tour company picked up...

Anyone know a good buyer's agent???

You might try Lava Rock Realty, we used them to buy our house in Waikoloa. This comes with a disclaimer, the business is run by the wife of a friend. The island is small community, ever more so outside of Kona and Hilo, personal connections matter here. Tell Peggi that Andrew sent you;) Lava...

Driving back to Volcano area (from Kona) after diving

It is a very long drive around the island via south point, far past what the milage would suggest. I just did that road this week, a lot of bad curves in south Kona, long lonely stretches in Ka'u district. I would be more concerned about driver/diver fatigue, particularly after an evening with...

    Wetsuit Requirement?

I dive either a 3mil shorty or full. Sometimes a pair of long dives in the shorty would leave me slightly chilled, the full has dealt with that issue. You may want to go a bit heavier if you are lightly built or plan on repeated dives. Keep in mind that the temp will be around 80F out of the...

    Hawaii diving over Christmas

Hopefully the surf dies down a bit for you, it has been epic on the Kona side. Had a shore dive with a friend planned today, we scrubbed that idea.

Top Shore Dives on the Big Island

You are welcome for the map. Pipe Dreams at NELHA, only in the best conditions can be subject to surf and current Puako, End of Road or House 40, hard to go wrong with any of the Puako entries Mahukona, something way up north, a pleasant place to spend a day hope you get some good diving...

    Air/water temp?

My dive computer says the water was 75F today just north of Honokohau, Kona Coast. It will not change much, if at all, for January. Air? Anywhere between 75 and 85 depending on time of day, weather, and location. Andrew

    Big Island Shore Diving

If you are looking to visit during the winter I would recommend staying north of Kona, in the Waikoloa or Puako area. This is the most sheltered area on the island, with more reliable shore diving. In the summer? Take your pick, you will not go wrong either way. Check out the dark blue in the...

Canon EOS M with Nauticam housing — First Review (and compared to my S100)

Thanks for the info! I love the M above water, I use it as my everyday carry camera. What you say about underwater rings true with my experience with the camera. I will stick with the G12 for now.

Snorkler looking for an Achilles Tang on Maui.

You will not find a lot of love for the aquarium trade among the Hawai'i dive community. Many share my own opinion that the industry simply steals from the rest of us. You may attempt to be responsible, but it is guilt by association. If the whole industry were primarily captive bred it would...

Can a Hawaii based diver do me a non-diving favor?

Odd story... Many years ago, as a kid, I picked up samples of fresh basalt from weeks old flows near Kalapana. I loved and collected rocks, the pieces were beautiful. Those pieces traveled quite a few places, Oregon, Arizona, even England with me, but are now back on the island. They...

Notes on North Kona and South Kohala Shore Dive Sites

Quite nice, some southerly swell, but not yet enough to muck up the diving. Two dives last weekend, two the weekend before that. Considering some shore diving tomorrow, need to get the tanks filled. Life is tough here. Andrew ---------- Post added October 19th, 2013 at 02:33 PM ----------...

Dive near Waikoloa or head down to Kona?

A second on Blue Wilderness, Dave and Denise are great to dive with. They usually launch at the Puako or Kawaihae ramps, both within minutes of Hapuna. I prefer north out of Kawaihae, do Horseshoe and the caves! Dove with Dave last weekend there, a nice day on the water. Puako can be done...

New Diver, Free Airline Ticket, Thinking about Hawaii--Suggestions Welcome

Hawaii has a full range of dives, but most dive ops provide trips for divers just like you... Vacation divers who do not need or want to press the envelope. You should have no problem booking a dive for your skill level. Maui or Kona would fit the requirements you list. I am partial to Kona...

    Kona in Jan

Typical temps for Kona are between 75 and 78F, with little variation, expect 75F in the winter. I dive a lot with a 3mm shorty or a 3mm full suit, sometimes a little cold after a couple long dives in the shorty. Add a little if you have a light build and carry no built-in insulation ;)

    Very disappointed!!!!

Current can be a real problem on the Waikiki wrecks, and a good reason not to dive them if bad. We attempted a dive on the YO-257 last summer to encounter less than ideal conditions. The dive master signalled to abort shortly after reaching the top deck. Reboarding the boat in the degrading...

    Manta bodyslams my hubby!!!

I got tagged by a manta last month. We were diving Garden Eel Cove, the Kona manta dive site, during the day. We had mantas all over the place, a great dive. I was filming a manta make a pass just below me on the reef slope when she turned and came right at me, clipping me and the camera. No...
