Galapagos- only possible on liveaboards? Or any short trips possible?

I did the Galapagos by live-aboard a few years ago and it ruined me for travel diving since. That said, you cannot make it to the really good spots like Wolf, Darwin, Fernandina, etc on day boats. The dives we did near the ports were definitely sub-par by comparison.

Cabo Pulmo or PDC for bull sharks?

That was not at ALL my experience in Cabo Pulmo October 2 years ago. The dive sites were luck-of-the-draw, so even though I went twice, I never got to see the Boiler, which was the spot I really wanted to see. We did 2 bull shark dives, but they were spent drifting down a deep ridge. You could...

    Cost per Dive?

I didn't want to consider this question at first. But the more I thought about it, the more I saved and even profited. Without getting into specific numbers, I am a working diver, so work buys most of my equipment and pays my bills. I also help out part-time at a dive shop, so I get free air...

Question for Big Island residents or recent visitors.

When early divers first donned their gear, they were warned of the blood-thirsty sea monsters that lurked in the depths. That is an image that has haunted each new jaunt into the open sea. Each type of dive carries with it a unique set of risks. Unlike other diving risks like DCS, oxygen...

Question for Big Island residents or recent visitors.

I believe Richard left to go back to the mainland.

    Albino Nurse Shark

I would start with either Nick Whitney at Mote or Neil Hammerschlag at RSMAS.

    Albino Nurse Shark

True albinism is a genetic trait known as oculocutaneous albinism where the skin, hair, pupils, etc completely lack melanin. In reptiles this is known as amelanism. There are other types where individuals lack other pigments (ex. anerythrism for lacking red pigments). The nurse shark in the...

Can virus or bacteria survive a PPO2 over 30?

As an anecdote: I had a friend take a cockroach down to 200' in a pressure pot for something like an hour, then shot him back to 1 atm. The bug twitched a few times, but regained all apparent function fairly quickly.

Sinking a boat with minimal damage

Most 20' boats have a hull plug. You might be able to just pull that and voila!

    Diving From an Inflatable Raft

I used to have a cheap 14-foot Saturn inflatable with an aluminum floor that could be folded up to fit in a station wagon and inflated with a scuba tank at the shoreline. I think I paid $2k for it. We were able to fix a 15hp Honda outboard to it which moved it wonderfully. Note: you WILL want to...

$50 Harbor Freight hookah system testing

I love the idea, and while I may never need a hookah system for what I do, it is wonderful to see the inventive design followed up with due diligence.

How to use a microscope to see the wonders of the sea

You might try using a simple filter system to concentrate the plankton before viewing. For example, you could run the water through a fine-meshed net or even coffee filter and put the detritus onto your slide.

Diving road trip in the Keys - March 2019

Others have covered some of your other questions, but if you are traveling all the way to the Keys, there is a lot of diving and water activities in Florida that is a must-do. In the Keys, my favorite wrecks were the Duane and Spiegel Grove. There are shark dives out of Jupiter that are well...

    SE Connecticut and RI diving

I am trying to find the contact info for a dive shop in SE Connecticut or Rhode Island on the world's worst internet. My girlfriend and I are going back to visit family, but we will have our dive gear with us from another stop on the same trip. It would be awesome to get a dive or two in...

    Raja Ampat...liveaboard vs land-based

I can't imagine being restricted to only one place in Raja. Misool is great, but so is the rest of the region. I was on the amy Ondina and wanted for nothing. The whole crew was really amazing.

Presenting RedWAVE, a ready and available underwater GPS system

Finally, someone is taking a concept that has been around for years and making an off-the-shelf version that we can use. That said, I have to comment on a few aspects: Anchoring a buoy to the bottom in some areas is frowned upon due to delicate benthic habitats. Unattended buoys could thus be...

    Lembeh, polluted water and illness?

Oh sure. These gobies got it on inside a candy wrapper, too. The animals will do whatever they can with whatever is there, I just wish people were a little less wasteful.

    Micronesia - Which islands?

I stayed at the Nautilus for a week. It has changed owners, but at the time the owners were absolutely wonderful. The dad played resort manager, divemaster, and all-around nice guy quite well. There is a tree in a nearby bay that is packed with fruit bats and endless wrecks in the bays to...
