I've stayed at El Cantil numerous times and always enjoyed it. The area to the north was once a dolphin pen that was damaged during Hurricane Wilma. Now it is a magnet for many species of fish and is fun to snorkel or dive. I too have seen seahorses in the area. Be sure to sit on your...
Saw a batfish on my last trip to Cozumel. It was in shallow water (less than 10 feet) right off the the coast by the northern resorts/private homes. Very cool!
Outstanding photos! I thoroughly enjoyed looking at them and didn't even get wet! I only wish I could see these creatures when I dive but only see the "big" stuff. Thanks again.
It would have been either 1997 or 1998. The picture was hanging in the Aqua Safari shop next to Plaza Las Glorias. I remember commenting to Freddy about how young he looked. Freddy has a good memory though and could maybe help. I like how you are pursuing this. It makes for interesting reading.
I do not have the photo. I only remember seeing it on the wall at the Aqua Safari shop. Now that I think of it, it might have been at the old Aqua Safari shop that was adjacent to Plaza Las Glorias. Bill Horn is the one to contact. Good luck!
I have seen a picture of JYC with some Cozumel divers in the downtown Aqua Safari shop. Bill Horn may be willing to identify the divers and possibly know the year. Freddy Contreras was one of the divers.
There are quite a few dive operations that would meet your needs. Another to consider is Mestizo Divers. Scuba Diving in Cozumel with Mestizo Divers - Cozumel Freddy has a spiffy new boat that will take up to 8 divers. He will also meet with your group to go over paperwork before your dives...
Another dive shop to consider is Mestizo Divers. Freddy will rinse your gear and have it ready for you when he picks you up for your next dive. His website does not show pictures of his new boat yet but it's a beauty.
This is indeed great news! I will be following any updates with interest. A trip to Cozumel is not in the cards for me this year so this is the next best thing to being there. Looking forward to video of your discovery.
Aqua Safari dive shop has the Safari Inn over top. On the main street facing the ocean. Dive boats steps away and restaurants, bars just a short walk away. Check out their stay and dive rates. Good staff and dive masters - you won't be disappointed. Check out their Facebook page for photos...
Yes, one boat captain I know did see a whale shark while his divers were down. He was awed and surprised to see it and said it was longer than his boat. Unfortunately his group of divers did not see it. This happened quite a few years ago. Don't know which Cozumel reef.
24 eagle rays this morning. Maybe more but counted 24 in sight. It helps to be first on the reef. Stay on the bottom and the rays will come to you. Excellent day!!
