Anybody been to Turquoise Bay Resort?

I realsie you have already decided to go to FI, but think that some of the points that scuba guy made need to be addressed. The management at the Subway Watersports Turquoise Bay shop changed back in January. They do have divemasters in training there who are not paid members of staff, but...

    Lionfish are in Roatan.

Sad to confirm that there have now been a total of 4 sightings, 2 of which have ben caught. Most of these seem to be small but unfortunately the first one that was seen and caught was adult. This photo was taken on May 23rd just before it was removed from the reef.

    Lionfish in the Caribbean

Today a lionfish was caught just off the coast by Punta Gorda, Roatan. Apparently thiss is the first confirmed sighting in Honduras. It was inside the reef and about 20ft deep. The fish was given to the Roatan Marine Park, still alive. Unfortunately it was big - about 8 to 9 inches from the...

    Atlantic & Caribbean Lionfish question.......

Today a lionfish was caught just off the coast by Punta Gorda, Roatan. It was inside the reef and about 20ft deep. The fish was given to the Roatan Marine Park, still alive and I've been told that this is officially the first one photographed and caught in Honduras. Unfortunately it was big -...

Today a lionfish was caught just off the coast by Punta Gorda, Roatan. It was inside the reef and about 20ft deep. The fish was given to the Roatan Marine Park, still alive. Unfortunately it was big - about 8 to 9 inches from the mouth to the base of the tail, which means it has been here for...

Dive stops in Western Caribbean (Carnival Cruise lines) - Advice!

I think Subway is a great operation - they offer a really personal service which I like and the number of people on the boat is generally always small. I'm sure you'll have a great time with them!!

    Want to go pro

You should check out Subway Watersports on Roatan - they have a DM intern program and are a 5 star IDC centre with IDC's pretty much every month. Accommodation is included in the cost. As a rescue diver your DM internship would take a month to complete and the IDC can be completed after this...

Dive stops in Western Caribbean (Carnival Cruise lines) - Advice!

Not much experience of Belize and Cozumel I'm afraid, but I can make recommendations for Grand Cayman and Roatan. In Grand Cayman, you should try Divers Down. They have a shop with shore diving on a wreck just a few minutes walk from the cruiseship terminal. If you want to do a 2 tank dive...

Bay Islands has new invasive species

In November 07, I had a conversation with someone who works for the DOE on the Caymans. He said that they expected Lionfish within a year - 3 months later the first one was seen on Little Cayman. Then in November 08, one was found on Cayman Brac. In January 09 5 (that I know about) were...

    Roatan Best Diving/Best Resort

Wow, this thread has got way too intense! I bet poor Franz has been put off going to Roatan since it now seems that all the local posters want to do is bicker amongst themselves and try to validate why their resort/shop is better with crazy mathematical equations. Would it not be better...

    Roatan dive operators

Does anyone else think it is funny that everyone's got caught up on the time zones when the op is called timetraveller! Anyway, checking your cruisehip time and local time is important on the day you dock, and make sure you tell whoever picks you up what time you need to be back (and clarify if...

    Roatan Best Diving/Best Resort

Just to let you know a bit more about Turquoise Bay - there is a beach, pool and the dive shop (Subway Wayerports) is a PADI 5* IDC Centre. They have several boats which can hold between 6 to 10 divers (depending on the boat). You can also do 3 dives a day, night dives and wreck diveson the...

    Divers Down watch out!

Tom, you make a very good point - when I guide a dive every group is different. It is easy to clock how comfortable people are in the water. If I can see I have a less experienced group, I will not look as much for things to point out to them as I want to watch the divers more. On the other...

    Divers Down watch out!

So, let me get this right - you are a newly certified diver, you should have done 4 dives to get this certification, so we are talking about what happened on your 5th dive. You know the recommended maximum depth for open water divers is 60ft, yes you can dive deeper with an instructor - which...

    Divers Down watch out!

Hello all - apologies to those of you who are regulars here - I am a scubaboard virgin, but reading this thread actually prompted me to sign up. I work on Grand Cayman as a boat captain and know most of the small operators. The original post on this thread sounds more like the day started...
