No, neither I or my buddies were cave/cavern trained, and thus we did not enter anything that did not have visible light in it with our dive lights turned off. I would like to get cave certified some time, but not for a while, seems like a whole new level of difficulty.

update: yesterday I went to Hudson Grotto with my new split fins. They were much easier to swim with. I also realized how much air stayed in my diving boots, and i got that out right at the beginning, so that might have helped too. thanks for all the replies Ponyfeathers

In my OW class i did float on my back once or twice to catch my breath. One thing that really helped time fly was the instructor telling funny stories and we never saw a clock. He would tell us when we had 5 mins left, 2 mins, 1 min, and 20 secs. So maybe someone can tell you dive stories...
