I tend to dive with my exhaust dump fully open. If I am feeling cold I will screw the valve down a couple of clicks so it will hold more air, but then I have to open it fully before ascending otherwise I will struggle to hold my safety stops.
I once had the opportunity to dive the Outer Farisan Island that guard the Red Sea from the Indian Ocean, its a fascinating place a once in a life time experience to dive. We were at a place called Hells Gate on the really old chart we were using a really amazing place, Sharks, Sail fish...
How about dismantling the valve having a quick look at the seating, O ring and re torquing it up to the manufacturers settings, that all ways seems to work for me. If the O ring is flat or marked in any way throw it away its pennies. I hate it if I am diving and have a leak. Never usually...
I started diving because at the time I lived and worked in a remote part of Saudi Arabia quite close to the Yemen in a reasonably large mixed American, British expat community ( Khamis Mushayt). At the weekend the compound used to empty as people went off down to the beaches to dive, so I went...
My pet peeves at the moment are my Dry suit neck seal, its sentient and I am pretty sure its out to kill me! Its really comfortable once I am in the suit. But getting the damn thing over my head without ripping my ears off is near impossible and if I hear anyone else say it will loosen off with...
Hmm, I have done about 5 Solo dives in my diving career ,my first was a night dive off a remote island in the middle of the Red Sea called Abu Lath, its a wonderful place (have a look on Google Maps). I was with a bunch of British Expats and we had just returned from a brilliant day exploring...
Once I was diving a remote Reef in Saudi when another Diver ( nothing to do with my buddy pair) came up to me and showed me his SPG, he was really low. We were at 20m at this time both my buddy and I were well within our Dive Plan. I signaled to my buddy that this diver was low on Air and I...
Scarpa Flow is really worth a visit. Not just for the Deep German Battleships but also for the Blockships that were sunk to protect the ancorage.
Scapa Flow
We were there last Summer and really enjoyed pottering around the wrecks at the Churchill barriers in less than 10m of water...
After a really brutal divorce at the age of 47. I went for a couple of dive holidays in Sharm and South East Asia.
I was all ways the sad single guy on the boat that the dive master struggled to place. Till they realised I was actually a half decent diver and after that things went really...
This is a brilliant discussion as it shows how important the predive brief is just so you get the communication sorted. I was told off on a dive because my way of asking for a quick air check is to show them my gauge and tap it. Your then supposed to show me yours, no one else understood what I...
Scuba Equipment is like airplanes, the stuff that comes from Europe is quirky/ over engineered. While American kit is built to do the job and intuitive to use. Think Boeing and Airbus.
I like Poseidon Regs as long as I have access to my tools to fettle them. If I was going to a remote...
I think you need to be comfortable in the water. I am a pretty poor swimmer but I can float for ever. We once finished a dive on a remote reef in the middle of the Red Sea, when we surfaced the weather had got really bad. I had dekitted first and the boat skipper was worried about us getting...
A couple of days ago I was browsing through a oldish copy of a well respected British Dive Magazine ( I think it was Dive) when I spotted a article about advancing to a Tech Diver. It was really well written and was advising about slow progression and building experience. Then it went on about...
If expense is a consideration go second hand. Where you are in the USA you should be able to pick up a nice Scuba Pro or Aqualung BCD that fits your requirements off E bay. My Buddy Explorer I bought in 1998 is apart from a little fading still in perfect condition and Scuba Pro/ Aqualung...
Dumpster Diver has very eloquently summed up every equipment failure I have ever had. The spectacular failures have all been with recently serviced or new equipment. Usually you get loads of warning of an issue, a reg starts to Free flow a little in current or an inflator starts to sneakily...
Its sad really, but from my memory of basic training there was very, very little training on horizontal trim and basic buoyancy control. That came later once I got the dive bug and wanted to not impact on the environment to whivh I was a awe struck visitor. Buoyancy skills came with time and...
