    Diabetes and Diving???

My regular buddy is a type-1 diabetic. We both carry gels and have practiced him consuming them under water to make sure he would have no trouble if it is needed. Lately we have been experimenting with using a bladder (camelback or similar) full of sugary liquid for the event of a long surface...

South Padre Island Recommended Dive Sites??

I've gone to the Texas Clipper and Seana's rig with American Diving. Very professional operation, well run, good equipment and excellent crew. I prefer a bigger platform on the boat, but they handle it well. Keep in mind that the Clipper is a relatively deep dive for a new diver, so plan carefully.

    Diving with diabetes

I've only noticed my blood sugar going up while exercising under 2 conditions: 1) I was running low on insulin. If you are already slightly high and start exercising you can get into trouble with high sugar and acetone levels. 2) I was under stress. If I am stressed out it seems that no...

    GUE Divers in DFW Area?

Just in case the OP is still looking at this... There are not many GUE divers in Texas but both Gillty, myself, and a couple others are GUE trained and in the Dallas area (Austin in my case, but I don't mind driving). I've met a few others who are interested in doing fundamentals, and one of...

Anyone been to Lake Amistad lately?

Same here, looking forward to that report (and not-so-cold temps). Only feel a bit envious you are going to beat me there :P

Anyone been to Lake Amistad lately?

Alan - I'll PM you when I go down there. It is looking like it will not happen until end November because or work. Richard - Thanks for all the info! I'm going to get a map of the lake to see where the spots you mention are. I might ask you a couple of details before finally going there in a...

Anyone been to Lake Amistad lately?

yeah, I just ordered a Sartek 21W light and I wanted to try it somewhere. I've never been to Amistad, so I thought it would make a good weekend trip from Austin. I've heard the vis can be pretty good. Problem is I don't have a dry suit, so I would like to know what the temps are before I...

    Checking your own tank valves

I've seen this happening a few times. Best approach is to double-check the valves with your buddy just before jumping in or while floating in the surface. Only takes a second. Regarding the 1/4 turn, I don't any point in rolling it partially closed other than avoiding the valve getting stuck in...

Will you buy a reg off ebay?

I'd buy it, but I would also send it for servicing before using it under the water. Add that to the cost and see if it is still worth it. You can generally save a fair bit doing this.

    Painting steel tank

You are absolutely right! I don't know what I was thinking (probably the buoyancy rather than the actual weight out of the water??). Thank you for the correction.

    Painting steel tank

not exactly addressing your question, but if weight is the problem why not try an aluminum tank instead? An AL80 is considerably lighter than the other options you've been offered and you can easily get them in colors :) Of course if the length of the tank is your concern then a small steel...

    LP vs HP Tanks

The only thing I can think of is what you have already suggested: some dive shops may not be able to fill up an HP tank to its maximum allowed pressure because they are using older equipment. I'd be interested in what other people have to say, I've been wondering about this myself!

Do you ever break the rules?

I've been on plenty of dives without any cutting instrument. My D4 has told me I was in "deco" a couple of times, but not by much and always when I had already started the ascent. I guess you could call it a calculated risk. In multiday/multiple dive trips it seems to become very conservative...
