    Mares Hybrid BCD

It's true there's been some historical issues with Mares MRS pockets, but I believe they've been addressed. My girlfriend hasn't had any issues with her hybrid (after being dived pretty hard off boats at weeklong trips at Cozumel and Fiji at this point)... BTW, she did get one of the first (at...

    Tips for Achieving Good Trim

One of the most helpful things I did was spend time in the pool with my equipment configured in different ways (like for warm water, with my drysuit, etc.), and then taking time just to play with weight placement. Simply, I got into a hover around 10 feet, assumed a good, streamlined dive...

    Mares Hybrid BCD

My girlfriend just got this and REALLY loves it. It actually folds in half for travel (the back plate actually has a hinge! Mares calls the design a foldable backpack). And it's fairly light (a little over 8#). Weight capacity is reasonable, with 9lbs at each side pocket, plus trim pockets...

    First Drysuit Dives

Actually, for a recreational diver, using your drysuit for buoyancy control is recommended. In that way you help manage suit squeeze, with your exhaust vent (properly adjusted) releasing air upon ascent. Using your BCD for buoyancy control will add to task loading since you will be managing that...

    PADI U/W Photography Specialty

For me, honing my buoyancy skills did more for my photography than anything else... i'd expect this would be true of photo-savvy folks, notwithstanding distance-judging, lighting, etc. challenges confronting anyone shooting underwater vs. land...

    Having ear problems while abroad

You might find the info here helpful in general. As to your situation, it does sound like medical attention is indicated. You can try and relieve symptoms using "ear dry" drops or alcohol, but by all means avoid diving while you have any doubt. Good luck to you - and I hope you find other ways...

Carl Gage Scuba Centre, Key Largo--Who Remembers?

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy and appreciate these stories - Carl Gage sounds like he was an amazing guy. It's not too difficult to imagine a book or movie about his life and the earlier days of rec diving. Heck, the the title would definitely have to be "Higher and Deeper" :)

    Cover UP!!

Nemrod, although I happen to agree with your sentiments in general, I think you were a little over-sensitive on this one. Atticus' post was not about you - it was about the mistaken assumption of other posts about this (covering with a bikini at Chessington) happened in America...

Where should I dive in Fiji?

I've been to Beqa Lagoon Resort last year and already have a return trip booked for next July. it's a dive-oriented resort, with boat dives every day and unlimited shore diving included. Optional night and Big Fish (shark) dives worth the nominal extra. Worth a look! Beqa Lagoon Resort (Marlin...

    Wide masks?

thanks, evad! I've tried the SP (better than the Mares so far) - will try the Oceanic...

    PADI tables finally going away?

I heard the arm for a light option will be out in late July. Meanwhile, I hear rumor the eRDPML won't work under at a depth greater than 10M if you hold it a certain way, so I think I'll wait for the next generation.... (tongue firmly ensconced in cheek!)

    Wide masks?

    I haven't - I'll check it out - thanks!

    Wide masks?

OK, so I have a big head. Well, wide anyway. I'm currently using a Mares X-Vision, which is just okay. I really wish it were a bit wider so the sides of my eyes don't feel pushed in and I don't look like I'm wearing a kids mask :-). I'm looking for a mask that's fairly wide, and still...

    Princeton Tec Dive Lights

Do like Princeton Tec's customer service - flooded a Tec 40, mailed it in (no receipt) and got a new one back :-)

Not sure about trusting my buddy...

Peak Performance Buoyancy can also help with air consumption - some divers compensate for poor weighting by swimming a lot (it's easier to overcome poor weighting when you also don't have to hover). And if poorly (overly) weighted, one wlll often use more air than needed by fiddling with the...

Not sure about trusting my buddy...

+1 And the disregard for safety stops because dives are shallow and short is a little disconcerting - safety routines are your "other buddy" and knowing as buddies that you ALWAYS do certain things together such as a dive plan, pre-dive checks and that boring safety stop is not only a good...

Shortie vs Full Wetsuit & Other Gear

Another advantage of a full suit is protection from coral and jellyfish... of course, minding your buoyancy will help keep you from scraping across or kicking things, but it can happen to the best...

Dive trip to Aus / Fiji for the newly certified

Beqa Lagoon Resort was fantastic - in fact, heading for a return trip next July. The "Big Fish" dive was the shark dive. Fairly deep at about 90' as I recall, so having a Deep specialty and/or AOW done by then would be recommended. Plenty of reef and bull sharks, and a tiger made a brief...
