CO and Fire alarms for liveaboards (was Fire on safari boat Suzana in Egypt)

Logged into scubaboard for the first time in years to respond that my understanding is that smoke detectors are actually on the list of banned items from both carry on AND checked luggage by the TSA without a hazardous materials declaration because most of them work using a minuscule amount of...

To dive brac with a 4 and 6 yr olds?

Cobalt Coast's beach isn't water side, the ocean edge is iron shore. I'm not sure how much kids that age could find to keep them occupied there but obviously Grand has more going on in general, its also expensive and crowded even off the beaten path like up at Cobalt Coast. Brac Reef has a...

    air travel options to Bonaire

When we were on Bonaire a couple of weeks ago there were KLM flights on the ground at least 5 days a week. I thought I had read that they were originating in Charlotte but KLM.com won't give me that option. At any rate I don't remember seeing nearly that many KLM flights on our previous trips.

    Shore diving in bonaire

More overthinking. Crime happens everywhere and common sense usually prevents it from happening to you. If your truck windows are down when the potential thieves roll by they won't even slow down because they know you've got the common sense to not leave anything of value in the vehicle. It...

    Camera carry on bag recommendations?

Airport Acceleration Just used my Airport Acceleration for the first trip a few weeks ago. Can't say enough good things about the Think Tank. It's an expensive bag but not that much more than a LowePro or similar and it is so much higher quality than the LowePro I replaced that it seems...

    Shore diving in bonaire

Very little in the way of "fingers" on Bonaire reefs to get lost amongst, in most places the reef is a nice sloping wall parrallel to the shoreline. Bouys range from 15 feet from shore at OilSlick to 200+ feet from shore at some of the sites up north in the park. Bouys are in anywhere from 15...

Roatan Marine Park Turtle Rescue August 4, 2011

I pay $25 per person each year for the Bonaire Marine Park tag, it's a drop in the bucket to each individual traveller visiting Bonaire but adds up to enough to mostly support STINAPA over the course of a year. I happilly paid $2 a day in Roatan for the chamber and wouldn't blink an eye at...

    What are these abundant fish?

When we were there last week it did seem at times like there were hundreds of them all in one spot. It is hard to tell from the picture but while there I had identified them as glass gobies.

    Travel restrictions and Ikelite strobe!

Funny how those rules are completely and utterly arbitrary isn't it? Flew from Cleveland to Houston to Bonaire on July 22nd and back on August 6th. Took three strobes and over two dozen recargeable batteries (mostly AAs but also Nikon, Dell and Panasonic proprietary ones) through the same...

Post Your Pretty Funny Stuff Here

A young farm couple, Homer and Darlene, got married and just couldn't seem to get enough lovin'. In the morning, before Homer left the house for the fields, they made love. When Homer came back from the fields, they made love. And again at bedtime, they made love. The problem was their...

    Egg Sack or what?

Looks like the discarded mucus coating of a burrowing anemone to me but I don't know if they have similar creatures on the left coast.

Bonaire Dive and Adventure made us happy.

Sweet, we'll be there on Saturday morning and had already been thinking about how many tanks we'd have to stash to get in both night and dawn dives. This is an awesome change and I hope to be able to report that it is still in place when we get there.

    Belize Hotel/Resort recommendatons

We stayed at Blackbird for a week and would definitely go back if they offer a good deal again. I'm pretty sure that out of all of the Turneffe resorts they are still the only one to offer three dives a day which was important to us. Not cheap but they do sometimes offer 50% off the second...

    Bonaire in How Many Days??

44 days for us. 11 more days until I find out if I can get out of this boot I'm in for my broken foot and start PT, shouldn't be a problem but if PT gets delayed another two weeks I may not be back up to full strength by the time the trip starts. Two week trip this time around.

Using USA battery chargers in Bonaire (240v/50hz) ?

Bonaire is 127V/50Hz not 240V. I've never even thought of not plugging in my laptop or my battery chargers. I've used both el-cheapo (labled 120V/60Hz only) and good AA chargers while on island and never had any issues with either. Anything with a motor in it will likely run at 5/6 speed but...

Daughter Freaked Out by Tiny Night Dive Critters

Yep, really. :) It can help an annoyed diver go from being freaked out by the little things to trying to gather them just to see how many they can feed. The corals appreciate the free jumbo size meal as well. Just make sure you hold your light NEAR and not on the coral, with tentacles and...

Daughter Freaked Out by Tiny Night Dive Critters

When they get too annoying go find a nice hungry coral to hold your light near. A good brain can grab so many of them that it looks like a small firework went off in the water. Pretty much any hard coral will have it's feeding tentacles out at night and will be more than happy for a free meal.

How good is the Coolpix L24?

Roatan April 2011 - philandjen's Photos Sorry didn't see your reply earlier. That is the link to the gallery for our most recent dive trip. If you flip through the other vacation galleries you can see how the images have improved over time as I've learned more about the system and how to...

    Cocoview as a single diver?

When we were there last month it seemed that the single divers had no issues finding someone to buddy up with. There really are people hitting the water at all hours of the day, although Jen and I were the only ones we saw getting in at 4:45 in the morning for a dawn dive during our week.
