Air in tanks: how old is too old?

Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that air left in a tank too long turned toxic, so didn’t want to take a chance.

    Deep Stops Recreational Divers

I’ve only been diving recreational for 9 years. I have to admit that I didn’t understand the term “deep stop”. I took it to mean just doing decompression stops when coming back up from depth, but as I read this thread it sounds like something different; something that “once was, but no longer...

Air in tanks: how old is too old?

I filled out tanks last summer for a dive trip that didn’t happen. Forgot all about the tanks until yesterday. I’m assuming the air is too old to use on an upcoming trip so I emptied both tanks and will refill. It got me wondering though... how old is too old?

    Diving post ACDF spinal surgery

Got the ACDF done Tuesday morning. No pain in the incision area, but my back truly feels like I have been beaten with a bat. I have some mild pain on the inside (on the spine itself) where I believe the actual drilling/shaving/shimming took place, but it's nothing compared to the muscle pain...

    What constitutes an emergency?

Years ago when I first began my dive training, my instructor told me "Stay calm. The only emergency is one in which you're out of air. Everything else is an inconvenience". I thought that was a great message for teaching a student to remain calm and work the problem.

    Diving post ACDF spinal surgery

Just found out I need another ACDF. C5/6 blew out two years ago. Now C6/7 is gone. Going in for surgery on Dec 4th. Have a cruise booked for the 15th - 22nd of Dec. We'll still take the cruise, but not gonna even get wet <SIGH>.

    Diving post ACDF spinal surgery

I had an ACDF (C5/6) in May 2017. In Feb 2018 went diving in the Keys. In April 2018 I went on my honeymoon in Bonaire and did shore dives, boat dives and dock dives without any problems whatsoever.

Airplane tickets - When to Buy

Just a point in general... You normally get the cheapest prices by travelling on Wednesdays. 30 years of travel has taught me that. It may vary somewhat, but in general if you can go Wed - Wed you'll get the best pricing.

Safety Stops, NDL, and other numbers

Steve, you raise a great point. As a relatively new diver, I know to "use" the dive computer, but don't "rely" on it. IOW, plan the dive, and use the computer to verify the dive. I found it interesting about how it calculates 12 separate "tissue compartments" and then uses the most...

    Purple Sea Urchins

When I was stationed in Italy we used to dive for sea urchins. The female was the only one that was of value due to having eggs inside. You can tell the difference between male and female by the shade of purple - the female was the "duller" of the two. They were considered a delicacy and you...

    Post-Surgery: Advice for Bonaire

They have added benches down the center of the pier - really nice ones - and also a set of motion-activated lights. There are two sets if benches, with tables on each end. They really did a wonderful job on the pier.

    Post-Surgery: Advice for Bonaire

We just got back home from the trip. Diana did great! Her confidence has been fully restored. We stayed at Coral Paradise Resort and they were great. We dove with Dive Friends Bonaire (Sand Dollar) and we were able to use the dock for entry/exit. We did a refresher course with them and it...

    Advanced Deep Dive Fail

To help with the panic/anxiety, just remember: the only emergency you have underwater is being out of air. Everything else is just an inconvenience. Take your time, remember your training, and work through it. During a recent (and first) night dive I got slightly disoriented. I immediately...

    Diving with a cruise

We bring everything except tanks and weights. We bought luggage specifically for our dive gear with rollers- can't tell you how much better that made my life! In nearly all cases I booked the dives outside of the cruise line - you never knew who you were going to get stuck with. I was able to...

    Post-Surgery: Advice for Bonaire

Well, all systems are go for our honeymoon in Bonaire. Wife has been able postpone the knee surgery, and does NOT need the foot surgery, so we've arranged three 2-tank boat dives with Dive Friends along with unlimited shore dives. They're looking forward to working with us to get her back in...

To kill or not to kill lionfish in the Caribbean and Florida?

A few years back I read an interesting article where they were trying to get sharks in the Caribbean/Atlantic to feed on them. They (the authors) were amazed at how sharks "here" wouldn't eat them yet sharks in the Pacific would. Never followed up any further on that paper, however I have...

Best signaling devices from the searcher’s point of view - update

This is a very good video on what happens when you push the button. Keeps it simple, but explains it from pushing the button to getting rescued.

Best signaling devices from the searcher’s point of view - update

PLBs need that power to also transmit through thick tree canopies for land use as well. Also, weather conditions can also hamper the signal, and these are "must have" reliability situations.
