Diving with Sharks at La Jolla Cove

Thanks for the compliment on the video. As for great white sharks, my understanding is that the Scripps Institute of Oceanography has a GWS monitoring station in La Jolla Cove and that they regularly record tagged great white sharks in La Jolla Cove. I am not too sure how excited I would be to...

Coldest it gets in Southern California (underwater)

At recreational depths in southern California for general planning purposes, during the winter months, you should plan on diving in water that is in the low 50s. In summer, you should plan on diving in water that is in the high 50s.

Diving with Sharks at La Jolla Cove

Yeah, that is the suggestion I gave in my prior post. I am glad you got a chance to see the seven gills too! Tyler, the seven gills are not common at the Cove. They only appear sporadically and no one knows why. For example, last year know one saw a seven gill at La Jolla Cove at all. I...

Nice Socal_Celt. Here is a photo I took of one of the seven gill sharks from the same dive:

Diving with Sharks at La Jolla Cove

This past weekend, I had another opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with several seven gill sharks at La Jolla Cove. My prior video of the seven gill sharks focused more on their tail as I stayed behind them as we glided through the water. This time, I swam parallel with them. So, this...

7 Gill Sharks at La Jolla Cove

I have been seeing them consistently in an area about 50 yards east and little bit north of Buoy A at the Cove. So, if you were surface swimming out to Buoy A from the Cove, just head a little right of the Buoy and once you are in line or a little past the buoy, drop down and look for the sharks.

7 Gill Sharks at La Jolla Cove

For the past few weeks, numerous people have been seeing large 7 gill sharks at La Jolla Cove. Yesterday, divers reported seeing dozens of 7 gill sharks. So, if you have a chance to dive La Jolla Cove soon, you should. Here is a video I put together from my scooter dive with the 7 gill sharks...

    Komodo Liveaboards. Suggestions please...

Yup. For a liveaboard trip, I would do it again. Doing 4 dives a day, my wife and I were extremely comfortable. By dive 3 and 4 of each day, some of the other divers were adding a 3mm wetsuit on top of their 5mm wetsuit. Nor did we ever overheat in the drysuit as we got dressed in the shade...

    Komodo Liveaboards. Suggestions please...

Right.... Mr. Gubbins. :) As I found out in Indonesia, drysuits are indeed optional in tropical water. The Mrs. and I just got back from diving the Great Barrier Reef. And, this time, we left the drysuits at home.

Looking for dive buddy Point Lobos July 15th with scooters

This is a very good example of what could go wrong. During our trip, one of the dive teams accidentally "finished" their dive in Bluefish Cove. When they surfaced, they realized they were in the wrong cove, but, had no idea which way to go. Luckily, they saw Phil's boat heading into what must...

Looking for dive buddy Point Lobos July 15th with scooters

Navigating to the sites without a guide was not that bad. We definitely used the BAUE maps. We didn't use any "landmarks" per se. Using the BAUE maps, we navigated by compass headings and the depths of intended sites. Using this method, we were able to navigate to Beto's Reef, Three Sisters...

Looking for dive buddy Point Lobos July 15th with scooters

FYI. I just dove Lobos for the first time a few days ago. All my dives were on a scooter. Right now, there is a huge plankton bloom going on. So, in Whaler's Cove, the viz was not good at all. So, finding the sand channel underwater was somewhat of a little exercise (though we did find it...

    Used DSS Lithium Ion Battery

Tobin, I am looking at purchasing a used DSS lithium ion battery for a Dive-Xtras Sierra scooter. The seller is not the original owner. He does not know the age or history of the battery. However, he has only used it twice. The last time was 6 months ago. Is there any way I can check the...
