Mystery grunt in Tropical Eastern Pacific (Mar de Cortés)

In a different forum, it is suggested that the juvenile patterns of Burrito Grunts might be showing in a full-size version of them: TEP grunt in Gulf of California | Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF)

    Cabo Pulmo in March?

I do not have first-hand experience, but I am considering diving in Cabo Pulmo around that time of the year too. The reports I have gotten say that water temperature is cold, visibility is not that good, but you can see mobula migration, so very worthy in my view. I dive with Cabo Pulmo Divers...

Mystery grunt in Tropical Eastern Pacific (Mar de Cortés)

Can anybody identify the grunts in the background of this photograph? Shapewise they looked like Burrito Grunts (Anisotremus interruptus) but I cannot find any photos in the web with the horizontal stripes these specimens displayed. White Margates in the Tropical Western Atlantic also display...

What kind of dragonet, in Veracruz, Gulf of Mexico?

Wow! That is a quality answer! Thanks for the thorough investigation on your local Lancers, Deborah. I know these are difficult to spot, and so I appreciate every single clue. I got a reply too in the REEF ID forum and that was also favoring Lancers: What kind of dragonet, in Veracruz, Gulf of...

Diving in and around Vera Cruz

I have done more than 200 dives in this area. I also recommend the same diveshops as ElGaucho. There are other smaller reliable operators, so if you do not find space for your dates, do not hesitate to ask. Let me know if you have any specific questions. Cheers, Itziar

What kind of dragonet, in Veracruz, Gulf of Mexico?

I have recently found specimens like this at about 15-20m depth on areas of sand mixed with coral rubble, inside the reefs of Veracruz (Mexico). I am at odds with the identification. They do not have any blue dots or markings on the body, which, according to the ReefNet DVD would be an ID...

Little silver fish in the Gulf of Mexico

I just received an e-mail from the Wilks, and they concur with Ryan that the most likely family is mullets, and that these little ones are juveniles. They cannot identify the species for sure, but they mention that Agonostomus monticola (mountain mullet) has been reported in Veracruz before, and...

Little silver fish in the Gulf of Mexico

Thanks for the suggestion Ryan. Do you have any recommendation for a set of photos where I can see what you are pointing at? The ReefNet set only has adults, as far as I can see.

Little silver fish in the Gulf of Mexico

Thanks for the additional tips. I know the ReefNet Fish ID DVDs, but I did not know these were by the Wilks. I will contact them and report back with any findings! If anybody else has any suggestions in the meantime, they are all welcome. I am learning a lot from all these comments. Thanks all!

Little silver fish in the Gulf of Mexico

Here another picture of the group: The tails do not seem to be a matter of projection, but if anchovies can open their tails later in time, that is a good option. My husband seems to disagree on the size, and claims they were about 1 inch long... Any futher confirmation with this picture?

Little silver fish in the Gulf of Mexico

Hmmm... I thought of anchovies at first, but upon looking at pictures, the tail of the mystery fish looks much rounder than the marked biforked tails of anchovies, doesn´t it? Anchoa cayorum, Key anchovy : fisheries, bait

Little silver fish in the Gulf of Mexico

What can this fish be? Found just below several buoys in Veracruz, Gulf of Mexico, November 16th 2009, at midday, T = 26 C. Size about 2-3 inch long, part of a small group. They Moved constantly in nervous swim. The most outstanding marking was the white stripe from eye to tail, apparent in the...

NDR: Urgent help needed from someone who can write in Spanish!

I have to disagree with you there. Both Jose and José are correct in Spanish, but they correspond to different pronunciations (stress in the fist syllable or in the second). If, however, the site is named after the tequila José Cuervo, then the second is the one to use, at least in Spanish. I...

Dos Gringos en La Ciudad de Mexico

Hi, Many DF residents dive in Veracruz as a weekend destination. This is a 5hr drive away from DF and there are comfortable regular buses between the two cities if you want to avoid the driving. There are also low-cost flights from Toluca (~1000 pesos return, from what I have heard). In order...
