Do you want to be a better diver?

Yes - with a passion! I have just started this wondeful journey! I don't know where it will take me, but I find myself wanting to improve daily, be it by actual diving, taking classes, reading anything I can get my hands on and hanging around with fellow divers, including here in SB. I don't...

Are you a recreational, rectech or technical diver.

I am a new diver and so far I have only done shallow OW dives. My goal is to gradually progress to wreck and cave diving. I am buying my gear and I am planning my education (UTD Rec 2, followed by Intro to Tech, followed by tech courses) with this goal in mind. Other than that, I only wish to be...

    Regulator Hose Configuration

I got certified using a conventional primary and an octo and then tried the longhose/necklace set up during the Essentials course. I've had one OOA incident and my (out of air) buddy failed to display demonstration quality etiquette in requesting and waiting for my octo. He just grabbed the...

What scuba gear should I get

After trying several regs, I settled for an Apeks DS4 first stage and XTX50 primary/XTX40 secondary second stage. Very happy with the way they breathe (some people take issue with the relatively small purge button, but to me it's fine). Good value for money and can support tech diving too if you...

Opinion on Mouth Inflation option on Power Inflator

I too had to disconnect the power inflator cable 2-3 times when I was diving rental gear because of leaks. I also practiced oral inflation as a means of conserving air (negligible benefit, if any). I still do it upon surfacing. It is useful to be able to do it without thinking too much about it.

Split from Catalina Diver died.. Advanced Certification is a joke

This sums up my OW experience in the warm waters of the Med. I came out of it with the ability to breathe underwater, the realization that OW c-card didn't make me a diver, and the desire and determination to become one. Recently I dove with 2 friends from my OW class. Since OW they went on...

    Future Training

If you browse through SB threads you will find many that discuss the pursuit of a career as a dive pro. They should help you get the big picture, both in terms of making a living as a dive professional and selecting the proper training agency(ies). Seeing that - like myself - you are a new...

    BC question

The owner of the LDS I trained at definitely got upset that I a) didn't buy my gear from them as soon as I finished my OW class, b) that I wanted to dive a back inflate and a BP/W, before deciding which BC style I prefer, and c) because I didn't want to sign up for AOW/EFR/Rescue Diver, 2 weeks...

New and have a gear question

Hello emander and welcome, both to scuba diving and SB. The proper way to seek advice on equipment would be to start a dedicated thread, as this thread discusses ways to choose a good SCUBA class, and you're already in one :). Still, some good advice that was given to me by SB members are to not...

Split from: Cozumel Incident - Fake C Cards?

Maybe for the same reason a guy I know and have dived with, likes to "log" fictional dives among his real ones in his log book. Even Einstein was convinced that human stupidity knows no boundaries... Understandable, but that same guy effectivelly sells to idiots licences to kill themselves...

Split from Catalina Diver died.. Advanced Certification is a joke

This path seems to be working well enough for me. Essentials introduced me to a whole set of new skills and really drove home the need for hard work and improvement. I´m working on those skills and as soon as I feel ready and my instructor concurs, it´s on to Rec2. I encourage fellow newly...

    HI, I'm new to ScubaBoard

Hi Cindy, and welcome to SB! Ebay and Craigslist are two likely places to look for your cable. I did search ebay, but came up with 0 matches. Try Craigslist craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums

YOUR OW course: What would you have changed?

I would have liked more dives before certification and a set of more realistic skills taught. There should be enough water time to adjust weights, teach basic boyancy and trim, test basic awareness, dive planning and adherence to the dive plan, and navigation. All these were mentioned in...

BP/W for Newly Certified OW Diver?

My story is similar. 9 dives after my OW and after spending hours on SB, reading and asking questions, I dove 4 times with 2 different BP/Ws. Having my UTD instructor there to assist me with fitting the BP/W and adjusting weights made things easier, and helped me decide that a BP/W is the right...

    Noob seeking advice on BCD

A friend flies over to Arizona next week and has agreed to pick up a BP/W for me, so even the Eclipse just got about 200 euros cheaper! But I am looking at other brands too. Thanks for the info!

Can you learn scuba from tv?

:no:Too many failure points (cassette player malfunction, power outage, etc.)! Gotta think DIR, man! It's enough to put tapes/books/DVDs/SB URL on a piece of paper inside your pillowcase, Your mojo will take care of the rest.

What did you learn from your very last dive...

Seeing as my last dive was the final UTD Essentials dive, what I came out of it with, was the ability to ascend from 18 ft to the surface making controlled 1 minute stops every 3ft, using only my lungs , and I also improved my awareness.

    Noob seeking advice on BCD

Let me define ´fair´in this context. I did my 5 OW dives and 9 more in various rental jackets. Then last Saturday and Sunday I spent around 5 hours in the water with the 2 BP/Ws. When I tried to get my LDS to rent me a BP/W I was given the old "you'll drown because you won't be able to stay...
